Calpol struggles

Had vaccines yesterday. Gave 3 doses of Calpol, decided to see how the night would go. Woke up to a super hot baby at 3am, decided to give Calpol. Pushed the first tiny bit into the mouth, he made some sort of a choking sound (he hates taking Calpol), became quiet, all soft, eyes not moving, him not moving…. I freaked out badly! Moved him to the side, did some pats on the back, talked and talked to him, while thinking frantically do I run to my husband, do I call the emergency number?! After what seemed like forever he started moving again, but imagine how hard it was to give the rest of that Calpol dose - I did it drop by drop, still shaken. I know that honey is banned from giving to babies due to the choking risk, but Calpol’s texture is just like that! 😩😩😩 Who else struggles with Calpol?

That sounds super scary. Hope you’re okay! Calpol can be so hard with these ages. If baby takes a bottle, you could put some in a teat, that works well. It was the only way I could do it with my first. With my second, I lay him down and when he tilts his head to the side, I place the syringe inside his cheek and then just really slowly administer. Sometimes putting dummy in between squirts can help too if baby has a dummy x

This sounds really scary, bless you. There is something in calpol that some babies react to, causing them to vomit, spot up amongst other things. It doesn't last forever but use paracetamol instead see if that works better for your LO

How are you giving it to your baby? The first time I did it, it was a struggle but somewhere in instructions it said to push the syringe inside their cheek and release slowly. So when I did it this way it worked fine.

You can’t give honey to under 1’s because of the risk of botulism, not choking. My baby hates calpol too, she gags on it and throws up every time 😩

@Lauren sounds like your lo is reacting to ingredient, try paracetamol instead

Use a teat to give calpol not the seringue

@Fatima I think it’s just her reflux and strong gag reflex, she barely swallows any before she’s being sick. I will try that if it keeps happening though, thanks!

@Chloe Still a bit shaken, to be honest. Would you just put Calpol in that bottle? What if the baby tastes and refuses to suck? Or you put it deep into the mouth?:) I was thinking after about doing it when lying down, but was not sure if it would just all leak out. Must try next time though. We don’t use dummies x Thank you 🙌🏼

@Fatima 🫶🏻 Oh, I thought Calpol was paracetamol? Am I missing something? 😅

@Elina Yeah, that is how we do it, deep on the side, so he does not taste it, and release bit by bit with breaks, in our case 🫠

@Masha calpol is paracetamol but there is also plain paracetamol for kids which doesn't have that active ingredient in it that some babies are affected by

@Lauren Oh, I see! Urgh, Calpol is gross, messy and sticky 🫣

@Anna I will definitely try that next time 🙌🏼 So he won’t taste it with the teat still?

@Fatima I see! Is it a better flavour for them? 😅

@Masha lol, don't think so 🤣

@Masha I literally just use the teat (off of the bottle) not mixed with anything else xx

They get used to it eventually, my toddler pretends to be poorly to try and get some calpol 🤣

@Lauren mine to 🤣
