Cluster feeding??

Hi everyone, I have a 4 day old that wakes up every one hour to eat during the night. I give him 30ml formula as I don't have my.milk yet. Is this normal?

Newborns tend to cluster feed, make sure to latch before giving formula if you’re planning to breastfeed, gotta tell your body to start producing. Hang in there

Yes it’s normal! They cluster feed specifically to encourage your body to make more milk so like Katrina said, make sure you latch first if you’re wanting to produce breastmilk.

@Katrina oh im trying but it's painful, I'm literally trying to pump rn and it hurts my nipples, I'm doing something wrong...

Newborns actually don’t need that much milk, I wouldn’t use too much formula make sure you put baby on the boob each time to encourage milk to come in. But keep putting Bub on boob and your milk will come in.

It really does hurt at first- it hurt for me for about 3 months but I persisted through the pain- I used nipple shields when one side was cracked and bleeding and that was helpful. When it got too painful I would pump on the side that was cracked and feed from the other for a few days until it healed. After a while I was able to get rid of all the shields, creams pumps etc and he just feeds straight from boob now zero pain. Hang in there! ☺️

I would just advise to not give formula after boob but keep just offering boob. If you add formula then your baby won’t be able to signal to your body how much milk they need to be produced by latching on regularly. Unfortunately that early on, the baby is latched on more or less 24/7

Maybe check the flange size on the pump? Also, I’ve found it’s helpful to rub lanolin on the flange before pumping & decrease the level if it’s uncomfortable. I didn’t have milk at first either and had to give formula. My pediatrician recommended latch baby for 15 minutes, then give the formula & pump for 15 minutes. It really sucked at first but your body should figure it out soon. You got this ❤️
