Nursery updates

We tend to get one picture of our LO every few days and daily updates of what they ate, sleep times and bowel movements. We get generic feedback at handovers and we’ve only had two detailed written reports since the start of the year. Some of my friends get way more pictures and updates and I was just wondering what the norm was. Also the ratio is 5 children to 1 adult with 30 children in total.

I’d be lucky if I got a photo a week! 😂 I just think they’re so busy, sometimes the last thing they’re thinking of is taking and sending out pictures. I don’t think there’s norm tbh, must just depend on the nursery and as you mentioned, the staff and whether they have the time.

I get pictures maybe once a week maybe longer in between. We send in lunch boxes and anything not eaten gets sent back. But they provide snacks and don’t get told anything about what he’s been given. Handover is usually very generic, just telling me if he’s slept or not and if he’s opened his bowels. Handover is always with the room leader and not his key person, who he’s had since September and I’ve not met once! Never had a detailed report I don’t think this is usual, everything I’ve heard from different places is so much more detailed than what I get. We are leaving this nursery soon for a different one.

I don’t think there is a norm, it widely varies between each nursery. My friends nursery just give feedback, no photos/updates via an app. Whereas the nursery my eldest went to we had an app and it was daily photos, observations once a week and then a detailed feedback at pick up (this depended on the staff member and if I had a good relationship with them) x

My nursery uses the family app so i can see everything she’s eaten, naps and nappy changes. They upload photos everyday, sometimes she’s in loads, other times just 1. They always give feedback on what kind of day shes had when i pick her up and tell me what they’ve done. She’s been there nearly 18 months now and they do parents evenings every 6 months plus send detailed progress reports every 6 months including the early years ranges x

I thought under two the ratio was 1:3, and over two it was 1:4? I could be wrong though. Like the others, we get photos someways and not others, and generic updates on toileting, food, sleep. They do a monthly observations thing but this isn’t always done or I sometimes get several at once.

Under two is 1:3 and over two is now a 1:5 ratio. We have an app at my nursery and children will have a photo every day and then updates on food, sleep, nappy changes, bottles if there still drinking them. We do parents evening in the summer and detailed reports at 12m, 15m,18m 2 years, 3 years and then one for when they leave to go to school. There is always a detailed verbal handover at the end of each day also talking about the activities etc x

Ahh thanks for confirming @Lauren ! Is that a recent change or am I getting mixed up? I’m sure I’ve heard about attempts to change the under 2 ratio to 1:4 as well, which seems pretty dangerous to me 😕

My nursery doesn’t have an app, we just get a piece of paper of what he did and ate at the end of the day. We don’t get photos, the only ones I had was when he started in Jan

@Ruth that changed in Sept 2023 so it’s been a little while now. Hopefully they don’t change the under 2 ratio, 1:3 can be challenging enough! X
