Silent reflux - advice please

Our 7 week old has been coughing randomly since birth and has started to squirm a lot and cry when trying to burp. He gags a lot and is congested esp at night time, he’s started to arch his back when he’s lay flat and isn’t enjoying his bottle at all. Hes never sick but he’s been constipated since 3 days old but we’ve been told he just has immature bowels. We took him to docs last night and he suspected CMPA even though hosp and paediatrician both said his only symptom is constipation as he’s got no rashes or any other symptoms. He said he was prescribing him milk to try however after coming on here and seeing others experiences with the milk I saw it can make reflux a lot worse with it being thin and thickeners can make them constipated and obvs he already is. After speaking to my HV I rang the docs back and asked if omeprazole could be prescribed as I don’t think it’s CMPA and don’t like the sound of constipation that comes with gaviscon. He agreed and said we will start the omeprazole straight away. I’ve gave him his first dose tonight but still the same on his bottle, does it take a while/few days to settle?? I’m a first time mum who absolutely cannot cope seeing their baby in pain. Advice would be amazing ❤️

This sounds very much like my little girl. We was in hospital due to her constipation (when she finally went it was grey and pebbles so liver needed testing) paediatrician said she had 2 out of 4 of the indicators for milk intolerance but wanted us to carry on her milk for a few weeks to see how she gets on before changing. We was on c&g anti reflux and over the couple of weeks she got better with her bowels so we’ve kept her on it. We do add lactose drops into her milk, she won’t take bottle now without it. We never tried omeprazole but was prescribed gavisgon which made her constipation so much worse that we stopped it

Hey, how have you got on? I’m currently struggling with my little girl and can’t work out if it’s cmpa or silent reflux! Gaviscon doesn’t seem to be working and she won’t drink neocate so wondering whether to try omeprazole

@Nicola hey! We are using the milk and his reflux is getting a lot better. We have had to put him onto omeprazole which has massively helped and it also helps his trapped wind which helps his constipation! We use half a scoop of thickener in his bottles too and it all seems to be ok 🤞🏼

Oh great glad it’s improved for you, which milk is he on?? And did you try both separately first or just both together at the same time?

He’s on aptamil pepti 1. We tried the omeprazole first and it was working great. We got the liquid form and it’s got to be given on an empty stomach then wait 30 mins for feed. It was hard to find a 8 week old with an empty stomach as they feed all of the time. It was working however his symptoms like coughing and sneezing and skin probs were still there so we changed the milk. His new milk was making him being sick on the omeprazole so we took him off it and used carobel to thicken up the milk. That didn’t work so we went back to Omeprazole with the milk and thankfully now he’s not sick with it x
