I’m on the same place with my boy he likes food and if it’s soft he’s fine but once I tried to do BLW where they give them a piece of banana and that resulted in a 911 call 😕 so now I’m scared to try ANYTHING other then purées, is that bad ?
@Itzy for banana give 1/2 the banana partially peered so they have something not slimy to hold into. They will gnaw on it and they shouldn't choke doing that!
I do yogurt he loves it but won’t put his fingers in his mouth when it’s on his fingers. I put the plate of purées and yogurt with the spoon and he just finger paints with it. He started picking the bowl up and licking the bowl recently. But won’t put his fingers in his mouth. The puffs he will fling around and throw on the floor. Maybe 1 will make it in his mouth. The teething biscuits have been a hit tho he will grab and eat those with no problem.
Oh man that's frustrating! I will say, though that finger painting with the periods and yogurt is actually good for his development and can help and aid in early writing and literacy! We finger paint with yogurt on purpose at our house with our babies!!
After he throws up what do people do? Do I clean him him up and continue letting him try the food or do we clean up and try again tomorrow?
Tiny bites of toast is a good start I like squeeze some strawberry juice on it so its not all dry. The puff bites don't melt in the mouth as fast as the teething biscuit things. I actually avoid the puff for my bb feels too scary nd I don't want him choking if he doesn't need to. I just kinda let my baby try soft stuff only. Tiny bites of anything squishy
The solid starts app/website is a great resource for how to prepare finger foods for babies. I use that all the time when figuring out what to give my LO. Is your baby throwing up or just spitting out the food? Spitting the food out is all normal and a part of the process of them learning their limits and how to move food around. Just like with the gagging. My baby will usually spit the food out after gagging but we let him keep eating. Maybe watch some CPR videos from like the Red Cross or something so that you know how to handle a choking incident should one happen. I know that being CPR certified and having my husband watch videos has helped me feel more comfortable since my baby has never really liked purees.
Is he actually vomiting fully or just gagging and spitting out the food currently in his mouth? For purées, do you pre-fill the spoon and hand it to him? That’s a great way to get the hand to mouth started. You can also give silicone teething straws to help with the gag reflex. For chewing practice, my baby LOVES roasted red pepper. Cut it into thick strips, roast with olive oil, salt, pepper for 15 min each side. They probably won’t bite any off, but just munch on it. We had a ton of success with sweet potato egg bites. 1 sweet potato, 1 zucchini, 3 eggs. Boil the sweet potato 20 min. Boil the zucchini 10 min and squeeze out. Mash everything into a bowl and then bake for 30 min in a muffin tin. They come out a super soft but holdable texture.
It sounds crazy but I just give my baby a raw apple slice and she loves them! Edit bc I was at work: the reason I say this is bc soft foods especially purée made my baby gag. She actually did better with harder tougher foods.
Some of the times it’s like complete throw up. Like everything comes out. I think from gagging he dry heaves and then throws up a lot.
I feel your pain my 9m girl has been starting purées and some blw. She’s got a hell of a gag reflex. She’s worse with purées than actual foods. But I’m totally in same boat. Usually once she pukes we take a breather and start new another day. But sometimes depending if she’s really upset or not we can continue. I let her finger paint in foods she’s got her own spoon. While I feed tiny amounts on spoon. Recently tried the Hakka brand teether popsicle like thing with poured and that’s helped a lot. She wants our food so bad when we eat so I give like a tiny piece of bread or meat or cheese as in tiny pinches in size. Seems to help when good flavor is there she’s more motivated to chew. We exaggerate our chewing to get her to also chew. Doing the num num sound. She puked more when she doesn’t chew we have learned. Getting hard teethers and bigger pieces of fruit to suck on helps get them to try to chew. And just go slow. Do what works for you and baby.
Definitely no need to rush. And keep trying daily gaging and puking can be normal but nothing it to your pediatrician too if u think it’s in excess.both my kids were so diff with this. So made me feel a bit crazy at times
The gaging is normal! It's a protective instinct babies have so they don't choke. Try giving more finger foods because that helps with development. Try yogurt, put it in their tray and let them put it in their fingers and then into their mouth. It will get the familiar habit. Them live on to other foods!
