Lactulose for baby

Has anyone ever had the doctor prescribe lactulose for their newborn and if so, how much did you have to give them? My little girl is 4 weeks and very constipated, I think it’s due to the hungry baby milk she is on. I combo feed with breastmilk too so hoping that it helps her poo as well but it’s been nearly 24 hours since she pooed (same as yesterday, got to 24 hours and she finally pooped!) but she is straining and struggling bless her heart! ☹️

My daughter was on it & it worked a treat! I only had to give her one dose. Then she'd have a soft bowel movement. Frequency wise, as & when. In the meantime, I stocked up on prune & pear puree ready for when she was on solids as it usually does the trick.

@Sarah🦄 how much did you have to give her? It says around 2.5ml but I seems like loads when I look at it! I’ve got some lactulose that I was given when I was discharged after my c section but didn’t really wanna give her any without the doctor saying so, but she’s in so much pain and discomfort and my doctors surgery is absolutely shocking when it comes to getting an appt 🫣😭 xx

@Sophie the doctor prescribed the amount, I can't remember off the top of my head but 2.5ml sounds about right. If you're unsure maybe speak to the pharmacist?

@Sarah🦄 yeah I may have to pop into the pharmacy tomorrow and just double check with them! Makes me feel so awful seeing her little face go bright red and having her scream from the discomfort ☹️ xx

@Sophie I hope that your baby feels better soon x

The dose on ours is 2.5mls, we were upto 3 times a day when it was really bad, but did help with the straining. Checking with the pharmacist is a good shout though

My son was on it and the doctor said to only give 2.5ml a week as if I give more he will get diarrhoea, worked a dream for us and now my son doesn’t get constipated at all. I got it given at about 5-6 weeks and we only used it twice and he has been perfect since x

@Emma how long did it take to start working? X

@Sophie the first time I gave it to him roughly about 2 in the afternoon and he had a massive poo explosion about 10-11 at night so a few hours but the second and third time I’d give it to him about 7 at night and he wouldn’t go until mid morning x

I’m hopeful that she will have a poo soon😭 poor little thing x

My little boy is on lactulose has been since he was about 6 weeks old he is now 16weeks, we were prescribed 2.5ml twice a day, he started going more often so we reduced to 2.5ml once a day. I was reassured by his paediatrician that it can’t cause any harm and that he can be on it as long as needed she wanted him to go about once a day or every other day x

When he went 5 days without a poo we were prescribed a suppository first and then to give lactulose after to keep things moving
