Solid food

Y’all help! My son just had his 9month check up and the pediatrician was shocked he isn’t eating solids. She stressed that solids should be 50% of his diet by this point. But my son will not eat food! No purees, only plays with the silverware if we do solids. He will nom on like chunks of veggies or a strip of meat but he’s just tasting it not actually eating it if that makes sense? -primarily breastfed/pump and bottle fed Please share tips and tricks if you also had a little one that just did not want to eat🫠

My first didn’t eat solids until 10 months old and even then it was only tasting things here and there. Around 12 he started enjoying food and didn’t have actual meals until 15 months old. He was exclusively breastfed. He’s now 2.5 years old and loves eating and very healthy. My daughter is almost 10 months old and she eats mealssssss she loves food and started solids around 6 months. Every baby is different. 50% of his diet must be food is the first time I ever heard that 🤔

Yea I thought since I was breast feeding solids wasn’t as important to push so I wasn’t stressing until this last visit! That’s good to hear your baby was in a similar boat and is doing well with food now. I’ll just keep offering for taste but not stressing about it.

I'm in the same boat. She's 10 months next week and everyone's surprised by how much formula she's still drinking but if I don't give formula, how would she get nutrition? We offer food but like your little one, she doesn't actually eat much of it, mostly plays with it. Purees are going decently at least.. I will say mine still has zero teeth so I'm wondering if she'll be more motivated to chew stuff once she's cutting teeth? Did anyone have this experience with their first where chewing took off more once teeth popped up? I wonder if there's a correlation there between timing of teeth coming in and how motivated they are to nom on solids

Have you tried mixing the purees with breastmilk? And also try different ways to feed. Them, for example, spoon, pouches, your hand instead of spoon, for more solid food. My baby didn't like the spoon that much at the beginning, so I had to make the food a little thicker and feed with my hand and slowly introunce the spoon.

50% is pretty dramatic!!! Realistically it’s more like 5-10% if you can get them to swallow stuff 😂😂 don’t stress, I’ve never heard that nonsense before for breastfed babies. Keep introducing food everyday but if they don’t eat it then they don’t 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Krystal my first girl had zero interest in food until her teeth popped at 8 months. My 2nd girl was immediately interested without teeth!

Same here! My girl absolutely hates purées but will eat eggs with spinach and Cheeto puffs. She just cut two teeth maybe about a 2-3 weeks ago and she shows interest in foods but hates it all and would just prefer the boob. I’d say just stick with bf and bottle feeding but still offer solids whenever you eat, when he’s ready he’ll eat solids too. Also if he’s within his range for growth I wouldn’t worry too much about it. My girl is 9 months and is 16lbs and my oldest was around 16,17 lbs when she was 9 months, she’s 2 now and 25lbs. I’ve always heard that food before 1 is just for fun too so don’t stress!!

What? My pediatrician says that solids are for mainly for fun and exposure until 12 months and that breastmilk should be the primary source of calories.

My daughter’s diet consists of about 60% solids. She takes anywhere from 16-27 oz of formula but she eats what we eat. Let your baby try to self feed. Create positive associations with food. If all she does is okay with some noodles, or feel different textures, that’s a win

Woah, 50%?! My son’s Pediatrician said some solids and at least 20 oz of milk a day. He eats purées and some other mashed up foods but when he started it was mainly him using the food as sensory objects (squeezing, feeling textures, etc). Don’t panic, every baby has their own time.

@Krystal mine popped out her fifth and sixth teeth about two weeks ago, and she started to really enjoy solids a week ago. I think you got a point
