It’s very weird they are all in one class! Our school has 90 kids in reception but it’s split into 3 classes of 30! They free flow and have a joint outdoor space but they have 3 separate classes and teachers
Personally yes, it seems like a lot of children in one classroom. I think 25-30 kids per class seems to be standard in the state education system but I can’t imagine how overstimulating it would be in one classroom with 60 kids xx
That’s quite an unusual set up! It wouldn’t be my preference, but they’re at school for a long time and reception is a relatively small part of it, and so if the rest of the school was amazing I might be able to compromise.
@Ruth no this is 60 children in the same class split into groups of 30 but in the sane classroom
Wow 😬
Is it a double classroom? My sons old primary school had a double classroom for the foundation stage so in theory could have had 60 children in what’s effectively one classroom but space wise is two if that makes sense
@Amy yes it is a double classroom but its nit about the space im worried about its the amount of distraction
I wouldn’t be ok with that at all 60 4-5 year olds is a hell of a lot of noise and distractions I know maxi would absolutely hate it and really struggle xx
I don't think I would be comfortable with that, I'd think my child wouldn't get the attention they need. How many TAs were there? We live in a village and 1 school is only 14 children the other is a max of 20
Ooh no, that would put me off too!
@Kath they have two tas per group but its the noise and distraction im worried about so I dont think we are applying there now. Even though we loved the school
We have viewed 2 schools so far and the one I originally thought I would love is like this. . 60 kids in one class?? Our 2nd choice of school has 60 kids in a class but split into 2 classrooms. . So I’m leaning more towards this option. But going looking at a 3rd school today that I think has a much smaller reception class but is the furthest away 🫤 so we will see.
I assume they have 2 teachers too? Is there a way to split the classroom - like a divider/sliding door for when doing group work etc? Reception should be much more free play than structured group work - so assuming after reception they’re all split then It wouldn’t automatically put me off if they ticked every other box :)
We went for a look at a school nursery and was like this every afternoon as they mixed reception with nursery. Wasn't quite 60 but a lot. Do you think this could be the case? Before afternoon they just had nursery children. X
