I absolutely loved my doula with my first pregnancy! She was there to answer a bunch or questions I had before birth & she was an amazing source of support & coaching through the birth. She coached me through various labor techniques & helped create a less stressful environment. Some Doulas also provide Postpartum support.
We had a postpartum doula for our first and we will contact her again. We started having her come over 4 times per week to help and show us how to do everything. We have no family in the US so for us she was probably our most valuable decision. When I was spiraling postpartum deep in the postpartum blues, she helped me recognize how I was feeling and helped me in so many more ways than I imagined. She was also on call if we had questions during the birth. Price - varies depending on experience. Most doulas will offer free consultations and the most important part is making sure you feel 100% comfortable with them. Not covered by insurance but I think we paid using HSA. For us her main job was to teach us how to look after a baby and give us occasional breaks. If we were struggling to get baby to sleep, she would work her magic. Personally, I wouldn’t hesitate to get a doula. Best decision we made.
@Emma HSA the bank?? Like the credit card??
@Emma or the health savings account?? What is that exactly??
@Marie my husband dealt with the payments but I just googled - ‘Doula services are eligible for reimbursement with flexible spending accounts (FSA), health savings accounts (HSA), and health reimbursement accounts (HRA) with a letter of medical necessity.’ I think we paid through bank transfer and we were given an invoice to submit. Any doula you speak to should be able to advise.
The doula was very helpful during delivery.
