Just diagnosed

Just got the call that I have GD. What does this mean now, will I have to completely diet or just make sure I’m careful and do some extra activity if I have a ‘bad’ meal (takeaway or meal out for example) Worrying about keeping my baby healthy now 😔❤️

I’d recommend looking at www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk , there’s loads of recipes and helpful tips! I also found it’s less about overhauling your diet and more swapping out high carb items. More than willing to talk you through it more if you need!

@Hannah thank you 🥰 feeling a bit bummed out but trying to tell myself I haven’t done anything wrong to cause this. Just wanting to keep baby safe and healthy x

Felt exactly the same way when I was diagnosed! X

You’ve got this! Take a look at the link from Hannah and you’ll probs get support from your diabetes team on foods etc. it’s not a one diet fits all so you’ll have some trial and error while testing to see what works for you. I found what worked for me and got into a good rhythm. I lost some weight during pregnancy, had great growth scans and was on metformin but mainly diet controlled. I’m lighter now after baby than pre pregnancy and my baby (born last week) has the checks after wards and he fine 🙌🏽

I completely get how your feeling, I was diagnosed two weeks ago, you got this! It’s more about swapping heavy carbs for lighter carbs, pairing with proteins and excercise after meals really helps to break down the sugars! You get a routine going and will work out what foods work best for you! X

Thank you all 🥰 hoping I feel less overwhelmed with it all soon xx

What kind of takeaway are you having or meal out? I still have a takeaway once a week, but I make sure it’s more protein than carbs. And I went for a pub meal the weekend usually have steak or chicken and my sugars are in range after this. Sometimes diet alone can help you, a few walks, smaller portions. I’m a fussy eater so I just eat fresh meat, and a smaller portion of carbs on the plate. If you want a bad meal, go out for a walk after eating. You might find that eating isn’t the issue and it could just be your hormones that will cause your sugars to be high This is my second time with gd this time I found out at 9 weeks. I wouldn’t say I’m strict with food but I just cut down on what I don’t need. Occasionally treating.

@Tiffany takeaways vary on what we fancy at the time, don’t have more than 1 a week. I have my works awards evening this Friday which is a 3 course meal but I now cannot remember what that involves and can’t find the menu anywhere! So not really sure what to do with that if it ends up being Carby. It’s a fancy meal so sometimes they try not to be too carb heavy or other times they’re hidden carbs! X

I’m the same with takeaways. I’ve even had pizza. But I am on insulin so would be slightly different for me. But say we have a Chinese I’ll have a curry, but less sauce as the sauce can send sugars high. The Indian my husband eats from I’ll have a few pieces of chicken. I’m also booked for a 3 course meal on Christmas. If it’s just one day I’d go ahead as planned and just try to avoid the sugary drinks, you can have Pepsi max as there’s no carbs in there. And maybe have lighter carbs during the day. Won’t be perfect or ideal but one higher meal is better than 3. Under my consultant I’m allowed two high readings then I have to get in touch. I honestly wouldn’t stress too much until you’re able to see your readings. They might not even be currently that bad. How far along are you? I made myself ill the first time I had GD because I was stressing but as soon as I changed the portions and less processed foods it really helped x

I got diagnosed 11 weeks ago now. I felt like my life was over to be honest. I ended up having to change very little about my diet - I just cut out sugary drinks. Only food I can't tolerate is chocolate shreddies 😅. To begin with I followed the gd diet and was very very strict then after a week or two I started to venture out and explore what I could have. I still limit takeaways ect and alter my order a bit from what I normally would have just to be on the safe side.

@Tiffany I am 26 weeks today and hope to go and get my monitoring pack later today x

@Kaylee that’s good that you didn’t have to do a major change! Im really bad for regular habits so just hoping I take my sugars properly and also eat regularly enough 🙈

I was about the same in my last pregnancy once you can see your readings you can adjust your life and eating around that. Even if you do need to change more than you’d like having a random day isn’t the end of the world. Just be kind to yourself. Not every diet works for everyone not every meals change works. You adjust for your needs, they look for patterns not just a random reading x

Thank you so much ☺️ I’m feeling a lot better than I did earlier. We picked up my monitoring pack tonight and I practiced pricking my finger which took a lot to get around the mental block 🤣 but hopefully now I’ve done one I’ll be fine doing more!

@Tiffany hey, thanks for checking in! Fasting have so far been higher than the target, but I know that’s the one I can’t do loads about. My first breakfast wasn’t good, but I had no clue really! 8.9. The other after meal readings have been good! I’ll add a photo. I worried for nothing about the work meal as my sugars were 5.2!!

Your reading aren’t that bad, as I said before I’m on insulin and my breakfast reading is always between 8-9 I take 13 units of insulin at the minute. Apart from the fasting I can definitely see you being ok 😊. What time are you having something to eat before you go to bed? Snack/meals? X

It’s been a bit mixed and match so far, first night I didn’t snack after dinner, second night I did snack at around 9:30, last night dinner was really late so I wasn’t sure how that would affect me but sugars were 6.2 so lower than yesterday
