Honestly I've gotten the same advice from multiple vets as well as the seeing eye foundation who breeds, raises, and trains dogs for the blind and they are very picky. Use the guys that have been around forever. Iams dog chow or Purina dog chow. We have always fed every dog one of these and have never had health issues
What are you currently feeding? This way, I can find a more affordable, comparable option.
Diamond. We had our working dog on diamond pro 89. For a while, but that's a really difficult one to get aside from ordering.... So we switched her to diamond naturals She's literally moved on to New pastures... And we switched our pet dogs to diamond naturals chicken formula all life stages
Diamond naturals is the same thing as Kirkland signature, btw. Just different outside label
Higher quality, better ingredients, not a lot of junk. Yeah it's not cheap ish of Purina ..... But diamond was reccomended by people that had working dogs they were raising.... Great Pyrenees. ( I asked in a women farmers helping women farmers group chat) You can't feed a working dog cheap food. It's a disservice to the dog. ( Well you can.... But you shouldn't)
Yes, diamond runs 45-50 a bag.... But our old girl is at least solid movements, even if they don't always come with warnings anymore. And she's getting her energy back too.
Diamond also is made by the same family that makes taste of the wild, once your dog can't tolerate normal proteins like chicken beef or pork
( well, family company)
They were on Purina . And have been for a while. But just because something is cheap and easy.... Doesn't mean it's as good as it looks. And yes, they did well on Purina. Of the varying ones we had them on , our pet dogs... But doesn't mean they couldn't be doing better....
So that's why I switched them to diamond
I started making food for my dogs. I feel it a lot less because it’s just the groceries or what I have in my pantry.
@Liv both Purina and Ian’s are straight trash though like have you looked at the ingredients?!
We use the costco brand Kirkland, there's actually a dog food grading system to determine quality. Kirkland scores pretty high. It costs between 25 and 50 a bag depending on which one you pick.
We have a dog and cat. They both eat “Taste of The Wild” . Dog bag: small is $20, medium is $40 Cat bag: small is $20

Taste of the Wild or Diamond Naturals
Costco ! They have good quality foods and they range from 25-30 My dog is on the weight management from Costco she use to be on a diff brand but i would spend 70 , the bag at Costco costs me 30 and lasts me longer !
I recommend whole hearted. For a big bag it’s about $50. My blue heeler has digestive issues and can’t do chicken or beef, so we get the lamb and brown rice. He shares it with our smaller dog. They eat about 2-3 cups a day together cause they share the same bowl. It’ll last us a little over a month.
If you’re up to it I make my dogs food after consulting and learning with a veterinarian nutritionist
@Bella His only allergy is pork, which is typically not in dog food. I'm currently using Natural Balance
@Kassia Currently using Natural Balance
@Mequell are you on a natural balance LID? If that’s the case, then I agree with going with call of the wild or diamond naturals. Bigger bang for your buck and on par with natural balance in terms of quality (Call of the Wild is more meat-based than Diamond Naturals). If your dog has a sensitive stomach (I know some people go with natural balance for this due to their large LID line), then stick to fish, lamb or venison :) Make sure to either do a slow, gradual switch (over the course of a week or two) or you can do 1/3 pumpkin puree and 2/3 food for the first week if you change cold-turkey. :)
@Kassia Yes we are on LID. Thank you!
I agree with Call of the Wild, they are a great brand. Don’t forget to slowly transition pup over to avoid upset stomach! Sending you luck and love. Call of the Wild is a great brand 🖤
Taste of the wild! My dogs love the salmon variety.
@Mequell I meant taste of the wild My brain 😤 #MomBrain
I’ve always found the cheapest way to feed my dog is to make them the same food I’m eating as long as it’s safe. I remember with my old dog I used to make me and her breakfast everyday. Still wish she could’ve met my daughter 💔
I have a friend that makes her own dog food in a crock pot and they love it. She does it for her cats too but different recipe. She says it saves her a ton and is healthier so less vet visits.
I was giving my dog Diamond Naturals. I think it was under $50 for a 40 lb bag, but I can't remember. He's now on whatever my mom is feeding her dogs from Costco because I moved back in with my parents. I believe it's also pretty affordable.
@Elizabeth I didn't realize Diamond Naturals and Kirkland Signature were pretty much the same. That explains so much! My dog has a sensitive stomach and he was fine on Diamond Naturals. When I moved back in with my parents, I was worried their dog food would make him sick. They use Kirkland Signature. He switched over just fine.

If you have a Costco membership their food is really affordable and honestly highly rated for the quality
@Lianna there's less brands than people think 🤓
https://diamondpetcompany.com/the-diamond-family-of-brands/ and diamond pet food company also owns Kirkland ( the dog food just gets a different label if it's going to Costco , though there's some noted minimal differences mentioned on dog food advisor forum regarding their canned food .... But the Kirkland signature and diamond naturals appears to be same food different exterior bag, though I can't say with exact certainty, personally )
Diamond naturals was easy to find at tractor supply 🤣🤣 since we'll be going to that as a go to wherever we live next ....
Just make sure you never feed grain free!
Kibbles and bits
@Ashley you’re joking…. Right?
@Alexus idk I haven't had a dog since I was a kid so it just came to mind. I know my dad used Eukanuba and Iams but idk if they still sell those
@Ashley they do, both not great food tho. But kibble and bits is extremely bad, just an fyi 😅
@Alexus I didn't even know it was still on shelves
@Ashley oh it's definitely still on shelves.... Our working dog was on that at her homestead she was on before us. That is absolutely a disservice to a dog.... Let alone a working dog
Kibbles and bits is.... Akin to McDonald's ....
Cheap and easy.... But really really not good
What are you currently feeding? Is there anything in specific you’re wanting/not wanting?
