@Hayley great advice as following feeling the same about finger foods and BLW and I'm a paediatric nurse
@Samina I also find things like hummus good as it’s a wet food. With things like kiwi and banana I squish this between my fingers and even tho not BLW I will then finger feed her this. She’s taken to all food bar boiled & puréed apple. I’ll often give fruit with natural yogurt. Only just getting more confident with meals that I have but last night I made a root veg hotpot and saved her some which she will have tmr. It was slow cooked so with the lentils it’s more like a paste so she should enjoy that.
I've just done an infant first aid course and honestly it's helped sooo much with my anxiety of blw
It might be worth speaking to your health visitor about it. They may be able to recommend useful points of contact. NHS Fife do interactive weaning sessions where they introduce you and your baby to blw so worth checking if there is anything similar in your area as well.
@Hayley oh that's helpful advice might try that. Hope she enjoys the hot pot. I'm yet to give lentils.
I highly recommend following Solid Starts on Instagram - they also have a food database that advises how to prepare different foods for different ages which is so helpful https://solidstarts.com/foods/ They explain how babies are less likely to choke when feeding themselves and there are some vids highlighting the important difference between choking and gagging (gagging is totally normal and expected). I also recommend downloading the British Red Cross Baby and child app so you can regularly give yourself a quick refresher on what to do if baby does choke. Hope these help x
I felt really overwhelmed with BLW until I started to read the posts on a Facebook group which was recommended by someone here. It helped me understand about the gag reflex, choking, and how to prepare food etc. and I’ve also been using the Solid Starts app too. Now baby generally will have a taste of what I’m having at each meal but I still have pouches in the cupboard if I want to give that instead so I’ve totally taken the pressure off and that has helped a lot! I will get the link for the Facebook group.

I feel exactly the same. I tried the BLW but it just have my nerves on the edge and I found I was taking my away quite quickly. It's so difficult but I'm using puree at the minute. He will have the crisp puffs and baby waffers but that's about it with finger foods. It's a new journey for both of us that we need to navigate together but I'm sure it gets easier x
I'm like this too, my LO will mainly have smooth purée or some with very small and soft 'lumps' I hate giving her puffs and things and have to watch every bite. The more I let her have those things the more I notice she's getting better at taking small bites as it doesn't make her gag. It's getting easier but I'm still considering buying a 'life vac'! 😂
You could start with lumpier purees so if you make them yourself use a fork to squish rather then blend it. You don't have to do BLW. I eat everything and anything and I'm only allergic to muscles which I developed at 12 affer eating them about 5 times and and my mum didn't give us whole food till I was 1. As long as they're trying foods it's fine
Valid - no one wants to see a baby choke. I too have a LOT of help from my mum. My parents didn’t do BLW with me tho so they can be a bit “ohhhh isn’t that a bit big” to some of the food offerings. However, I haven’t stopped with finger foods. I’ve trialled many chairs to feed her in. I’ve found the mamas and papas floor seat with a tray the best. I sit on the floor alongside. She’s upright and supported. I’ve tried lots of different foods and textures. Would you feel more comfortable with Brocolli? Crumpet THINS cut in the fingers. Pita fingers. Even tho not enviro friendly I have found pre cut watermelon sticks a good size and texture. I also have cooled boiled water on hand and now encourage sips every few minutes. There’s some good BLW dietician pages on IG and YouTube (not just some influencer mum).
