Cat anxiety?

Long story short, we have a cat who we've had for over a year (male, fixed) who was perfectly litter box trained and is now sometimes going outside of the box. He has an appointment with our vet but they can't get him in until next week. Possibly relevant background: he is much more skittish than our other cat. Our other cat likes to play fight with us and is generally just laid back. My husband has had a couple instances with this cat in question where he tried to play with him and he got scared (at this point I've told my husband just don't interact with him at all). It seems like the bathroom issues started after that. Is there anything to remedy the issue and get him back to going in the litter box 100%? I'm trying to be patient because I know it's not really his fault but I know I absolutely cannot deal with this on a permanent basis.

It could be anxiety, but in that case, you have to figure out how to ease his anxiety. Our part Maine Coon wears a calming collar, we also have made an effort to pay attention to things that upset her and decrease their frequency as much as possible. But it could be unrelated. Are you finding the poop right outside the box? He may want it cleaned more frequently, or he may be constipated. Both our cats require miralax periodically.

@Cindy no it's throughout the house, mostly on blankets and baskets of laundry and stuff

@Rachel does sound stressed/anxiety induced. :-( poor furbaby. Any big changes? Does he do butt scooting? It could be an anal gland issue too.

@Cindy no big changes I can think of. I guess we kind of have a new cat but it's a stray we've been feeding outside for awhile now and they don't interact. He's inside and the stray stays outside and it's been months now we've been feeding the stray so I kind of doubt that's it. I haven't noticed any butt scooting.

Interesting. Hopefully the vet has some ideas! Our older cat has been getting constipated and she sometimes leaves it right outside the box
