3.5 months is a bit too early , they suggest starting at 26 weeks but 17 weeks is the earliest you can do it , their stomachs are just not developed enough to do it , they should be sitting by themselves up quite a bit and hold their head up well(which means no wobble). If you’re in the uk please speak with the health visitor before doing it as they can give further advice and tell you even more about the dangers of doing it too early (it’s not just the baby getting a bit of a stomach pain). Also wait for the baby to show actual interest in food like properly grabbing it from your plate or leaning towards it. Let the baby tell you when they are ready! If you think they are not getting enough and seems still hungry you can still integrate with a bit of formula (if you breastfeed). So yes I’d say wait a bit longer , don’t rush them growing up❤️ for us we started with baby rice (still leaving it very liquidy and mixed with breast milk) when she was 5 months

I second this!

Please don’t.

Far too early

Too early. I agree with what Sara said. Baby needs to be able to sit up alone and hold head steady

I wouldn’t start weaning . If you want introducing new foods in purée form could be beneficial but that’s as far as I’d go

any reason why you're wanting to start so early?

Way too early, do some research about baby cereal if you can.

hes 16 weeks and holding himself up really early, honestly i just felt that he was hungry and bottles weren’t satisfying him enough anymore so i let him try little amounts of puree and now its kind of a routine. hes having one spoon of baby porridge and one spoon of fruit puree a day

i meant holding himself up really well***

That early, if he’s still hungry he needs more milk/formula. It might seem fine to test the waters but babies do not need food/nutrition besides milk for the first year of life.

Too early. Check out this reel from SolidStarts on Instagram about what readiness for weaning does and doesn't look like and really make sure your baby is 100% ready before weaning. You know your baby best, but arm yourself with knowledge before making a decision that could negatively impact your child long term https://www.instagram.com/reel/CctYihwFmAP/?igsh=d2s0bDNmc3Y1ZTI=

@Charlotte that was super helpful actually thank you, hes definitely showing interest but maybe not as ready as i thought. thank you!!

Probably not the best idea unless advised by their doctor

If your baby isn’t getting full from just the formula, start putting baby oatmeal in it. In my local H-E-B/Walmart they even have different flavors with dried fruits! Your baby still needs formula to get the proper nutrition and water. They can get extremely sick tying either right now the normal way. But by all means still try purees from time to time.

as long as you don't put the oatmeal in baby's bottle because it is a choking hazard that way

@Sarah Tbh, I’ve always been able to fully mix mine in the formula. It just makes it a tad bit thicker to where they slow down when they eat. But it was still smooth liquid, no chunks.

that doesn't make it not a hazard

@Sarah Oh, what makes it a hazard then? My babies and brothers drank it like normal formula.

@Sarah Our pediatrician said 1/2 tablespoons mixed in is totally fine, and it has been. As long as you monitor your child, as you should be already, as they eat, there should be no reason this is a legitimate problem. But that was only because two of my kids and both of my brothers weren’t getting enough food with plain formula. So, maybe if it’s a serious problem with hers, the doctor would recommend the same thing. 🤷🏽‍♀️

hence the part where it said "unless there's a medical reason" but in op's case, it doesn't sound like the risk would be worth it because there isn't a medical reason

@Sarah Well the medical reason would be if her baby isn’t fully getting satiated by the formula. That was literally the only “medical” reason we had, it’s not a special order. By one they had the oldest on pediasure to replace what the oatmeal was providing. But I would still recommend getting the okay from a pediatrician.

ok girl

Do not put baby cereal in a bottle unless directed by your doctor.

@Amie thank you

No! Your babies digestive system cannot handle that and they won’t receive the fat and nutrients their brain needs to develop. At that age breast milk or formula only. I’m not sure what reason you could have to do that.

Way tooooooo early. World health organisation and many other studies recommends 6 months of age onwards for a number of reasons. Gut maturity, increased choking risk, the presence of the extrusion reflex, their only nutrition required until 6 months is breastmilk or formula.

Please do not do cereal in the formula it is old practice and no longer necessary in most cases or even not deemed safe sometimes. Please don’t use cereal unless authorized by your doctor that your child is not getting enough nutrients or filling up properly. Also look into reflux I thought my son was hungry for more but in reality he had bad reflux.

Never ever ever put anything other than milk in a bottle. It’s dangerous, outdated and stupid advice!

If baby is more hungry give more milk. They go through development and often feed more sometimes less it just depends on the baby. 3 months old is still so small.
