What centile should baby be in

Hi everyone my little one is 8 weeks old today and the health visitor said he’s on the 25th centile. She never explained what it is and she said she expected baby boy to be higher in weight than what he is. He’s 10lb today and was 6lb 4oz when he was born. Just wondering what the normal is for a baby of his age. Thanks x

I honestly hate the percentile stuff because every baby is different! And the percentiles that they are going off of are from like 1960! My baby is in the 1% tile for height and weight and head circumference and he’s completely healthy.. he’s gaining weight pretty good too. He started out at 3lb 12oz and last doctor court at 11 weeks he was 8lbs 13 oz.. he’s 13week now so I’d assume he’s somewhere in the 9lb range.. Doctors aren’t concerned either.. babies usually lose weight after being born so that could be why your baby is only at 10 pounds right now.. but even then that’s almost 4 pounds weight gain especially since your baby was born on the smaller side. 💪🏽

My lg was 6.15 born and was 10.5lb at her 6 week checkup , was told she’s growing perfectly x

Have a look in your red book - it shows you a graph where they plot your baby’s weight. The lines are the centiles. I think as long as the baby is staying on the same/similar centile then they are gaining weight ok and it doesn’t matter too much which line they are on. If they jump up lots or fall down lots then I think it can be something that they need to keep an eye on. I have twin boys and they were always way below any of the lines until they were one and now they are in the 25th centile. My newer baby is on the 75th x

I could not agree more @Celecia ! My boy was born 9lb 3oz and has gained his weight slowly. On the 9th centile. He’s very happy and healthy. My girl was the same even after we started weaning her she gained weight slowly or at her own pace ☺️

My daughter was born weighing only 5lbs 12oz and she is currently 11lbs. She has jumped up a few centiles since birth. She’s 8 weeks and 5 days today x

Just to explain the centile, being on the 25th simply means that 25% of babies the same age are smaller than him. 50th would be average weight. As the others said, as long as he follows more of less the same line, it's fine and the actual centile doesn't matter. You can use the graph in your red book to keep an eye on how he grows.

As long as they follow their curve and height and weight are within 1 line on the graph it’s normally not a concern. My daughter was born in the 60th ish and dropped down to 30th ish but followed her curve bouncing around between 30th and 45th finally hitting 60 again right before her 1st birthday. I weighed once a week till 12 weeks then once a month at home and tracked it in an app on my phone. my little boy is 5 weeks old and just had his first bath today and so hasn’t been weighed since the health Visitor at 2 weeks old. Tried to weigh him today but our scale wasn’t working right so have no idea how his weight is plotting right now.
