Not Righteous but why do we twist God’s word?

So early today, I was having a conversation with my friend, it got heated ( on her side) because she didn’t let me finish my points and she ended hanging up our call. So the conversation was about a person on YouTube who was sharing his visit to hell and heaven. So one of the things he shared was that most Christian’s are in hell because of make up, braiding hair and jewellery. So I shared my view by referencing the scripture, basically I agree with what the guy says because of what the word of God says. 1 Peter 3:3-6 . So my question is why is it hard for us to obey God’s word? Why do we twist it to suit us? I’m not righteous, but why do we do it ?

Like why do we do our hair and makeup and wear jewelry and all that?

What do u think God is trying to tell us in that scripture?

@Gabrielle like why do we say, “ oh no this message wasn’t meant for us…blah blah” or “ times have changed”

Because a lot of the times people don’t understand context. I’ve read the verse you’re talking about and from what I gather it seems like it’s giving advice to how wives should be and maybe not making these things an idol. I really don’t think you go to hell for wearing make up or braiding hair

I don’t think God was saying that makeup and jewelry sends u to hell. It says don’t let it be MERELY OUTWARD. Meaning u can look good on the outside but what matters is the condition of your heart. U put lipstick on a pig it’s still a pig

But it advises us not to adorn ourselves with these things.

But context is important, this verse is mainly talking about how to submit to your husbands and not to focus too much on these things but focus more on submitting to your husband. For example people misinterpret Jesus’s last words on the cross but fail to understand the context

Yes because they can become a distraction for what’s actually important. And I also see it as a warning too. When meeting people we try too look inwards and not only at the outside because the devil work is to deceive

Yeah I think it’s just like don’t idol. If you HAVE to do things and it’s become an idol in your life then that means you should probably not do it. But wearing makeup for fun or getting nails done for fun it’s not a problem. Same with like people getting tattoos. Some people think you shouldn’t and some people say that the Bible is like translated differently and that times have changed and that the new testament doesn’t say you can and people get it done because they don’t feel convicted about it

It’s important to dissect the word of God IN CONTEXT and properly read the words. Read Ezekiel 16, God Himself adorned Israel. Peter isn’t saying don’t adorn. He’s saying don’t let your adorning to be “MERELY” with braids and such. Meaning it shouldn’t be ONLY on the outside appearance. People would be very surprised to know that the women of the early church did in fact wear makeup, jewelry and braiding. It’s about motive and focus. The focus should be on the inside not outside. Misinterpretation of scripture leads to understandings like this one.

1 Peter 3:3-6 (NKJV) “Do not let your adornment be [MERELY] outward--arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on [fine] apparel-- rather [let it be] the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible [beauty] of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.” It’s important to dissect it well. He’s explaining how true adornment is your conduct and heart, not the outside.

Two things of notice on my part with this discussion: 1. Incognito the beginning of your post states “not righteous”. Are you implying that righteousness is a bad thing? Righteous- Doing, or according with, that which is right; yielding to all their due; just; equitable; especially, free from wrong, guilt, or sin; holy I can assume that you are meaning that you aren’t trying to place condemnation on others but in the same post also seem to imply that those without your understanding of that verse are twisting scripture. Correct me if I’m wrong? 2. You asked why we twist God’s word. I don’t believe that anyone fully follows scripture to the letter besides Jesus when He was on Earth. Our walk is a continuous learning and gaining of wisdom and convictions. Do you believe that all people fall short somewhere? Aren’t we then, in our misunderstandings or error, covered by the grace of God?

I take testimony of a nde loosely, because they are still human and trying to explain what God allowed them to see. They are most likely getting close to half of it wrong or at least misinterpreted. But the importance of it being real, is the message. Not necessarily their exact messages. Because we're all human and that is why we have scriptures. I think what the person was trying to communicate, wasn't that outward adornments condemn you to hell. But that obsession with them, or forgetting the heart of God, is the problem. We forget that God is never fooled or missing something. He knows and isn't fooled by anything. I learned so much on the YouTube channel of Randy Kay. But their still human, and I make sure to be praying about them. I did hear one story when the guest implied that God led her into sin, in order to use her. And that's not right at all! He can use our broken choices, but he'll never drive us into sin.

@Bethany what is nde?

@WhitneySis, I never said righteousness is a bad thing. I simply said I am not righteous. I am admitting that I’m not righteous. Even the scripture does say “No one is righteous, not even one” - Romans 3:10. No one fully follows the scripture, hence I said I am not righteous. I do believe people fall short, even myself, hence I say I am not righteous. I am aware that we are covered by the grace of God, but why then do we abuse the grace of God. Why do we know and act like we don’t, including myself.

@✨Wis 🇭🇹 1 Timothy 9:10

Okay thanks for the clarification. Out of love, I would suggest you take this topic to God in prayer. If it’s something that you are truly seeking clarity on- God will reveal exactly what you need. As someone who has lived under religious law and mindset, I caution you to not fall into legalistic thinking. The beauty of grace is that it allows the space for God to convict us, individually, and cover us for everything else. Not that we seek to go against the will of God, but to walk in the freedom that comes from knowing that we are saved and not condemned, and that our Father will lead and grow us as He sees fit. Love over fear sis! Romans 7:6 Romans 8:1

Incognito, can you give the reference again? I’m assuming there was a typo since there’s no 9 chapter to 1 Timothy

Hi, everyone doesn't cherry pick and twist scripture, that's only the people who don't truly love Yah (God). Yes, we fall short sometimes, but true believers don't try to willfully sin, so you shouldn't try to justify sin by saying "I'm not righteous." We've all been made righteous through faith in Mashiach (Christ) as it says in Romans 5:1, Romans 3:22, & 2 Corinthians 5:21. For those struggling, spend more time in the Most High's presence, and yield to the Holy Spirit. He gives us the strength to turn away from sin, but we still must choose to submit to Him everyday, and not be misled by our own understanding or feelings. Remain humble and don't allow others to tempt you out of righteous character. About the makeup. Don't idolize it, you're beautiful the way He created you. Don't misuse your beauty with ill intentions. Put Him first, cheerfully obey Him and everything else will follow.

@Ericka spot on!

@Ericka Thank you.
