@Gabrielle yes exactly
I think it’s a way for us to speak directly to God. I think it’s great. And for churches it’s supposed to be a thing between you and God. If churches are praying in tongues then awesome but it shouldn’t just be a oh look I’m speaking in tongues. My church just prays like usual and then they might go into speaking in tongues
The reason why I’m asking is, that the bible actually mentions that people used to speak in tongues but in actual languages so others could understand them. Nowadays it doesn’t seem like any language to me but maybe I’m wrong
I do think it happens. I don’t think it happens to the extent people say it does, or on demand
There’s different kinds of tongues but since this isn’t taught many people don’t know. I’ve seen both kinds of tongues in church growing up and I’ve seen them get translated as well when God wanted to speak to the church. Unfortunately since most of Christianity follows cessationism, there isn’t much teachings on tongues and when there is, it’s majority teachings of cessationist view that tongues don’t exist today, aren’t “gibberish” and was only foreign language and then SOME Pentecostals teaching that it’s proof of salvation and if you don’t do it, you aren’t saved. Personally I believe in both, not just from experience but from properly studying the scriptures outside of doctrines of men as well as studying the early church writings as well
There's a difference between the gift of tongues and praying in tongues. Any believer filled with the Holy Spirit can pray in tongues, just have faith and allow Him to speak through you. He knows what you need, so He will pray for you and others through you. The more you practice, the easier it is and it can be on demand. Proof of the Holy Spirit is bearing the fruit of the Spirit.
@Ericka could you tell me some bible verses about praying in tongues? I’m still a bit confused about that
@Ericka but I think that’s referring to the gift of tongues or am I wrong? I mean I don’t clearly see in the bible that there is two different kinds of speaking in tongues
My apologies, I should've typed it out differently. There's the Personal tongue: 1 Corinthians 14:1-4, the Proof tongue: Acts 2:4-6, the Prophetic tongue: 1 Corinthians 14:26-28. This whole section talks about tongues. 1 Corinthians 12:10-14:40 One must be baptized in the Holy Spirit, it's an immersion of the Spirit and they'll receive this power from Him. I think you should ask the Most High for this, continue seeking Him and He'll lead you. Matthew 3:11, Acts 19:6.
What do you mean opinion? Like are they the same or should we do it?
