Spitting out

We started weaning last week and I’m worried that my daughter will not tolerate food. She has a mixture of different textures on her plate (finger food, mashed and purée - following a book recommended by health visitor). She is happy to sit at high chair and loves tasting all the different foods however will spit out the purée. She will bring the finger foods to her mouth and chew and suck while smiling. She loves the mashed food as will chew however will spit out. Is this normal? I know it’s early days but I’m worried!

Some times spitting out is a sign baby isn't ready yet. But if you're at the 6 mouth mark I'd just keep trying and she'll get used to it

It's definitely wayyyy too early to be worried. It's only been a week. Your baby's gag reflex is pretty much at the opening of her mouth at this point so it's very normal and expected for them to spit out the majority of food given to them. It would be more concerning if she didn't spit out food at this age! Keep letting her practice and remember at this age food is a supplement to their regular milk and not a replacement. The fact she's taking to playing and exploring her food is a fabulous sign so try not to worry as hard as that can be

My girl is 7 months and still doing this. The super soft/fine puréed food she just pulls faces and pushes back out of her mouth but she’s great with finger food or mashed things. She also HATES being spoon fed! I keep joking that she’s an independent girly 😅 She seems to like yogurt though even though that’s a puree texture 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah she’s 6 months so been advised to try. She really enjoys tasting new things and is so excited when at her high chair just doesn’t swallow the purée bless her xx

Mine is 6 months 1 week. She has been having food for 3ish weeks and until this week I don't think actually swallowed anything. Then this week has managed much better.

My baby is 9 months and still does this with finger foods, I think it’s a pretty normal reflex

Yes we've been weaning for about 3 weeks and he still hates most purees but he's much better with finger foods or lumpier textures (mashed potato/ boiled egg)

Mine is 9 months and just started trying to eat. He would get mad previously and spit everything out. Now he swallows purees and chews normal foods (but sometimes spits that out). The thing that's working for me now is using a metal spoon (one of ours) and putting his bowl on my plate so he thinks I'm eating it.

My daughter didn’t like mushy foods at first . She loves broccoli but to this day not if it’s soft enough for a baby to eat easily lol. She’d gum pieces of steak until they were gray. Purées were not a hit at all. Chewing and swallowing is something they have to learn but even purées are a texture they’re not used to. She’s getting the nutrients still so that’s what matters. Food isn’t the main source of nutrition yet

Sounds super normal! They’re getting used to textures and tastes and just the idea of eating itself. Sounds like she is showing a lot of interest which is all you can ask for to start! I don’t think my daughter was consistently eating much until about a year old and then I worried she was getting too much milk, but she was absolutely fine.
