Doctors over a cough

My kids have a chesty cough. They've had it about 3 days now. At what point do I book the GP? I've never taken them over a cold I've been giving Calpol, vitamins and keeping them wrapped up warm checking temperatures and checking for rashes at each nappy change but they absolutely fine just a cough and little snotty nose

It's usually if it's lasted more than 7 days, or you pick up on other things like pulling in the ear, if they sound wheezy, etc. But normally a cold should go away after 7 days. Also, don't give calpol if its not needed. Just do what you are doing, if it gets worse then a trip to see a GP. My girl is just recovering from a slight chest infection, where she had a cough for way over a week.

Mine had a cough for 3 weeks cos of back to back illnesses but Dr said chest was clear even tho he sounded chesty. If its upper respiratory they don't do anything. Our kids are at the age for Vickes now so I was rubbing that on chest and back night and mornings. If ur little one is napping put it on before a nap too. I've got an upper respiratory now too and the pharmacy said chesty cough med with menthol cos the menthol breaks it down. Not sure if they do a kids version. And lots of warm drinks will also break it down.

Thank you. I've also got a 12 month old that I'm still breastfeeding so makes treating things that bit harder unfortunately

I would go to the gp today if you haven’t already. I took my son on the 4th day October 10th then on October 15th was told it was viral nothing wrong. Even when I explained other symptoms then I took him again this time was the head nurse on 5th November. He has asthma now on an inhaler 8 puffs a day

So we have constant coughs only after 3-4 weeks we both went to doctor. She had an ear infection so got antibiotics but said her chest was clear. We use Vicks every night. Chest back and feet! I do too it does help for your 12month old buy snuffle babe same as Vicks but safe for baby. Also find nasal saline spray and aspirator really helped as cough was often snot going down back of throat. We always elevate head end of cot (she has a pillow under her mattress) my sister used to put booked under upper feet to elevate it. Don’t know how much it helps but we were trying anything we could. I also give her cough syrup at night. I found that after her milk at night if I give her water that helps too xx

It’s a tough call but tbh, I would only really be concerned if it was impacting her negatively like her eating, sleeping, she wasn’t right in herself, etc. If she was fine in herself then I would keep an eye on it but not take her to the gp - I might speak to the pharmacist if I was really concerned. She goes to nursery & picks up all sorts 🫣
