Nursery

Hey mums! I’m not working at the moment due to some health conditions but I do want to get back into studying. My partner thinks it’s a good idea to send our little one to nursery. He works full time but because I don’t we can’t get the 15 free funded hours or even the 85% discount on UC. My baby turns 2 next year in March. Does anyone know how we’d go about this or if it’s a case of we’re not entitled to anything unless I start working and would just have to pay the full bill?

You can put your details into this government childcare website and it will tell you what you’re eligible for and when: https://www.childcarechoices.gov.uk/?utm_source=Search&utm_medium=keyword&utm_campaign=Childcare_Choices_2024&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIttj-9JqEhwMV1JNQBh1g-gFuEAAYASAAEgIPWPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

There’s 2 lots of 15 hours funding. Time for Twos and Working Families. You should be eligible for one of those. Check on the gov site to see what you can get. Also look into Tax Free childcare, this will help lower the cost. If you’re going to uni there is some sort of grant you can receive that will pay towards the fees. I’m not entirely sure how you apply for this or what would consider you to be eligible for it but I’d definitely ask and look into it. Hope that helps x

There’s some great resources above. You could also give HMRC Childcare Helpline a call and check with their eligibility department. Yes, they are very busy, but sometimes it’s worth checking directly with them just in case you may be missing something.
