BMI obese

Hi! I was surprised to find out that at my 12 week scan, my BMI was 30, and it's playing on my mind. Before getting pregnant, I was a size 10/12 and still fit in those clothes (obviously a bit stretched), and my boobs have doubled in size! What are ppls' thoughts on BMI? I'm really trying to eat less, but I'm so hungry 😩

I just ignore it until the pregnancy and postpartum are over (unless there’s problems with it obviously). Has your doctor said you were overweight?

No, it was just the midwife at the hospital. They weren't concerned but just advised I watched how much more weight I put on

I wouldn’t worry too much about it then but try eating more high protein foods to help you feel full and/or walking more

Thanks Katie, definitely will do. Thankfully, I haven't put weight on in 4 weeks. So far, so far so good!

BMI is outdated, it doesn’t take into account muscle mass and overall body composition but as a general rule it could be useful. I would be more worried about putting on excessive weight rapidly but I can’t say much as I’ve put on more than is recommended with my pregnancy my bmi is probably up there, I started of skinny and now I’ve expanded everywhere

So the BMI scale is very outdated and doesn’t take your body build in to consideration for example pre pregnancy I was 145 lbs in a size 8/9 or small-Medium with a bmi of 18/20 roughly but now I’m 218lb with a bmi of 30ish at 37+5 and my doctor is just happy with my weight gain so it is all subjective and as long as you make healthy choices and don’t develop any complications remember that you are growing a life and whatever it takes your body is doing amazing things!

That's made me feel loads better, thanks Bee. I'm a really healthy eater and I'm trying my best 🥰 Maybe it's time they updated their way of tracking weight/health in pregnancy!

Also went though this myself and felt so embarrassed until I realised how outdated BMI actually is! It’s also created and based on white males so doesn’t take any female anatomy into consideration. As long as you feel good and healthy I wouldn’t worry xx

@Rosie thanks Rosie! It can have a big impact on a pregnant woman's mental health..so ridiculous

@Hannah it really can, just another thing to tip you over the edge 😆 x
