Have you had it actually assessed by a professional on the NHS? Not a just a GP or midwife, they aren’t actually qualified. My GP told me it was fine, the midwives told me it was fine, but my HV referred me to the infant feeding clinic anyway cause it wasn’t getting better. She was gaining weight great but we struggled with breastfeeding. The consultant watched her drink from a bottle and knew immediately she had TT, so recommended it be fixed. It made a big difference. So I didn’t need it in the end, but I found a private clinic on the Association of Tongue Tie practitioners website. It would have been £140 for the assessment and £110 for the division, which included follow up appts as needed and some feeding support. We were referred at 10 weeks and had it cut at 13 weeks (would been sooner but she was sick in hospital for a week and had to cancel the appt)
I had my son’s done after nhs delayed mine because I was combi feeding and wasn’t able to get formula intake down. Latch was really painful which meant I wasn’t producing as much as needed. We used Sammy in Ashford. https://tonguetiespecialistkent.co.uk Was definitely worth the travel and she was very accessible throughout. £250 overall. We needed a second cut after that which was an additional £70. I would highly recommend going private if the nhs are taking too long and it’s having an impact on your bf experience. Felt exactly the same as you and wish I’d got my son’s done sooner ❤️
@Rhiannon oh really, my health visitor was the one who told me to get in touch with dr, my midwife happened to be the tongue tie specialist in the area and she said the waiting list is so long that they are being quite tough on what qualifies to get it cut :( Maybe I’ll push a little more as they are not me trying to feed my baby every hour because she latches on and off the whole time then falls asleep xx
Maybe your midwife had done a qualification in it then, most midwives do not If the wait lists are really long in your area, then the benefit of private will mean it’s resolved much quicker than waiting. Having it cut made a huge difference to us so I do recommend it!
We had our son's done at 48hours old. It was £140 irrc
I didnt get it done the first 4 months was so hard but he was gaining weight so i didnt want to put him through that he is 2.5 now and still breastfeeding and doing great
@Rhiannon thank you! I’m going to have a look into it! As it’s making me want to stop breast feeding 🙈 x
As others have said, you need to see a qualified IBCLC who is fully trained in infant feeding and the identification of tongue ties and other latching issues. You should be able to see one on the NHS so either really push for it through the health visitor or look into your private options. Good luck!
We had our daughters cut privately at 6 months as we were struggling with weight gain. A breastfeeding counsellor put us in touch with a paediatrician who did them privately and for the NHS. We wanted to get things sorted quickly so went private. He came to our house and did it here, it cost just under £300 I think, we live in Hampshire, price probably varies a bit around the country. It was well worth it for us. X
