Tongue tie
Hey everyone, I just wanted to jump on here and share my experience as an adult who has a tongue tie. Maybe it’ll help give some perspective to your child’s future if you are deciding whether or not to get a tongue tie release.
Firstly, I am not sure if back then (I am 29) the doctors or nurses mentioned the tongue tie, thus offering to release it, however nothing was done about it.
In highschool I was teased for not being able to poke my tongue out.
I have 2 teeth that sit behind my main teeth (i have overcrowding so the 2 teeth didn’t grow across the line) and these teeth are the ones my tongue pushes against when I speak. If I didn’t have crooked teeth I believe my speech would be really bad. Noticeably bad. I would definitely have a bad lisp and knowing I need to have braces to correct my teeth, I know I’ll need a tongue tie release first as I will not be able to speak properly.
As I am now, I have to really work to have clear speech. It’s a conscious effort everyday. I am also a singer and it can make my mouth muscles over exert.
All in all, I WISH something had been done about it as a baby. I wish my parents didn’t leave this alone/took notice.
Although it doesn’t necessarily effect me in a horrendous way, it has definitely made an impact on my life when it’s something to simple and easy to fix.
I am now looking into getting surgery to release it which is daunting as an adult as the tongue muscles are strong and so it the tie.
My son has a tie and I WILL BE getting it released. I do not want him to face the same struggles as I did.
I wish nurses would stop telling parents it won’t affect them in the future. I feel like they are lying to you.
With love,
From an adult with a tongue tie x
Hi, I got my tongue tied fix as an adult while getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed and I’m glad I did! Healing time wasn’t too bad and just required a few stitches under the tongue
