When did you switch your kids to forward facing?

I am not asking for what the safest option is, I know car seat safety, I’m just wondering what everyone else did

Between 5-6 years old

She's currently 12.2kg (2y), we can rear face up to 18kg so will be doing that at a minimum. Once she reaches 18kg, depending on her age I will either try to find a new car seat with a heavier rear facing weight or forward face.

We switch once it's no longer realistic to rear face. With my oldest that was at about 2 and a half. He was way too tall (he's HUGE for his age) and every single time we got in the car was a horrible wrestling match and meltdown because he hated being rear facing with his legs crammed up (no, he could not find a comfortable way to fit his legs, for the people who are inevitably going to come at me saying kids are flexible and will make themselves comfortable) and we hit a point where it seemed safer to forward face and know he was buckled properly than not be able to get him in properly rear facing because it was such a battle. That and I was very pregnant with baby #2 and trying to fit 2 rear facing car seats in our car was a nightmare. My second baby is coming up on 2 and still comfortably rear facing with no problem so we'll see how long it works for us. No plans to switch him anytime soon

Just switched my 5 year old. She loves it. My now 19 month old will rear face until he outgrows his seat just like his sister.

When my little boy was 2.

Every single time we go to get in a car (rare - we don't have a car) my boyfriend says our almost three year old is too big for rearfacing. He is still within the limits of the car seat so he doesn't need to know forward facing is an option.

We’ve just had to forward face our daughter at 2.5yo, hopefully it’s just temporary and we can switch back. We’ve just bought a new car and 3 trips in a row she’s projectile vomited whilst rear facing. Not fun having to uninstall the seat and clean it every time, car smelling and clothes in the boots in carrier bags. When she gets used to the car again I’ll spin her back.

i haven’t swapped yet but won’t be no earlier than 4-5

I will switch when my girls are over 5 years old or has grown out (beyond 5) as recommended ❤️ To note my girls are 98 percentile and require seats that rf that go to 35 kg x

Our seat goes to 40lbs and he’s 26 right now at 2 so he’s got a ways to go. He was a 28 weeker too so he’s a little smaller than the average 2 year old.

I switched once my son maxed out the weight. My car seat actually had a lower weight capacity then I hear most people talk about. Our car seat only went to 16 kg 35 pounds. We was just over 3

My first was 2 but I was very uninformed about rear facing and she was a large child still is at 5. My 2nd I'm going to attempt to keep her rear facing as long as possible and her seat rear faces to 22kg.

Haven’t switched yet but planning to max out the rear facing limits of our seat. I think it’s 49 inches and 50lbs. My son is almost 3, in the 99th percentile for height around 37 inches and 37lbs (84th percentile for weight I think). He’s perfectly comfortable and doesn’t know forward facing is an option yet. I think we still have a ways to go before he maxes out the limits. He’ll also have a rear facing baby sister next spring so I think that will help too.

The summer of 4. Granted, his only baby seat was a convertible 0-4yr one so it was his second seat coz we never used a system. We turned when we got him a 4-8yr harnessed booster

Just got a FF new seat as he’s maxed out the weight on his old one, and he’s 4 in Feb.

Very young as boys were throwing up so the sat in front. Girl also was around 18 months 🙂

I turned my oldest around when she was 4.5 because I couldn’t lift her into her car seat anymore while pregnant. My husband switched my middle child around at 3 and I didn’t fight him on it. My youngest is 2.5 and I hope we can keep her longer, but I think she will consider that she wants to be turned around with her big sisters, I won’t allow it until at least least 3.

My son was 1 maybe 14 months and with my girls it depends on which seat they’re in and if my 6 foot 5 husband is in the car with us but they do forward face as well post 18 months - they do both but it took a bit longer for them since they’re a lot shorter / smaller than my son was and a lot less demanding etc

Eldest is about to turn 3 and will be rear facing as long as possible. She’s on the 90th centile and is currently in a 25kg ERF seat, but I’ve bought new 36kg seats for both cars so I’ll move her up to those when necessary. The baby fits better in the 36kg seats currently.

I’ll stop at 4/5 years as the thought of my child been internally decapitated in the event of an accident is terrifying.

My son when he was a little over a year- he had bad motion sickness and would throw up even from driving to the grocery store- once I turned him around that stopped completely.

It goes by weight!

@Sophia car seats are by weight. You can get rear facing seats up to 36kg which is right up to 7 years old depending on centiles. Children should rear face till atleast 4-6 years depending on centiles as if they are forward facing in a harness and the car is in an accident there body is pinned to the seat their head flys forward and can cause spinal injuries and internal decapitation. Children’s bone structure isn’t suitable to forward face until around 5 years. Even though it’s legal to FF it’s not safe.

@Molly was about to say the same thing about bone structure ! ❤️
