Good Morning! I am trying to surprise my children 5 and under with a puppy for Christmas. I'm struggling on what breed to get. I am a single mom so definitely also seeking a good watch dog/protective dog but one that has a good temperance as I have little children again.. what are your thoughts?

Golden retriever, German shepherd?

Poodle for no hair!

Golden doodle ?

Medium sized golden doodle. But know that every doodle is different. Some have more poodle coat, some have more golden coat. Unless you get a second or third generation where it's been selectively bred for the poodle coat Watch dog breeds aren't necessarily best For little kids .... But all dogs do tend to have a protective instinct to some degree

Working dog breeds like German shepherds require a lot of training and are strong as well

Doodles are horrible do not get any doodles! Lol. German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Labrador, Boxer, Pitbull. But whatever you choose please research and make sure you can give them the exercise/maintenance they need! Especially with small children sometimes it’s really hard to get out and exercise big dogs. Small dogs require less work but they’re not really “watch dogs”. Just alert dogs lol

If you decide a little dog would be better then Beagles, Cocker Spaniel, Bulldog, Boston Terrier, Pug, Yorkie, Shih Tzu, Basset Hound, French Bulldog are good breeds

I would 1000000% recommend either a Boxer or a Rhodesian Ridgeback

Shih Tzu! They’re the best

It really depends on the home you have (backyard or not- some dogs like are great apartment dogs vs backyard dogs) and it depends on how much time and energy you want to put into the dog. So without knowing that it’s hard to recommend a dog breed.

If you go to your local shelter you can talk to staff and they’ll match you with a dog with the temperament you’re looking for regardless of breed! It’s nice to get a personality match instead of just going after a whole breed. Just do tons of research and remember puppies are a ton of work. They’re gonna pee and poo inside. They’ll go through teething where they chew on things and you have to do all of the proper training. Adoptions an adult dog can be a heck of a lot easier when you have kiddos you’re already looking after

I vote golden retriever or Lab if you are looking to go to a breeder. If you are looking to go to a shelter it will definitely end up being a mixed breed so just make sure there are notes on the dog saying it is good with children, other people, other dogs/pets…. Etc. It’s great to give a home to a pet in need but you also don’t want one you have to worry about hurting your children or friend/family or possibly another dog. We have have a golden and BIL/SIL have a lab and they are absolutely adorable with kids ❤️

@Alexus why has every doodle I’ve met seem like it’s on crack 😂😂 but a pure golden or pure standard poodle are great lol

We have 2 shih tzu/bichon frise mixes. They are excellent family dogs. We had one when my daughter was born and he adored her and guarded her and we got puppy when she was 20 months and it was amazing. Highly recommend. They don't shed either. They get to 13 to 18 pounds max, love playing or napping and adjust well to any lifestyle. Not a purse pet but I didn't need that personally. Idk if I'd say watch dog but they'll definitely alert you if someone comes too close.

@Carly right! Idk but same! And I agree, if they’re not mixed they’re fine😂

@Alexus I guess mine is an oddball she's more half and half. Built like a standard poodle, coat is light curly ( a literally half and half), ridiculously smart like a poodle, general loveable of a lab but seems more poodle than lab .

If you really want a specific breed , do your research and find a rescue for that breed. Every single breed type, yes even working breeds has rescues. Don't know your state, but there is even boxer rescues and yes you can get adult boxers that are young but already full grown. They are great family dogs, she'd but don't require a ton of brushing.... Some have heart issues, but obviously like with any dog take them in for regular vet care including annual checkup

My mom grew up with a boxer as a family dog. They have ugly "mugs" ( faces) but are very sweet and friendly

@Elizabeth not that they’re bad dogs or not child friendly! But omg they are soooo hyper and all of the ones I have met have not been trained. They like to jump and zoom lol. They are very sweet but just from experience they are crazy 😆

@Alexus ah! Well we found ours at a shelter, a few days after she had turned 2. Full grown. Friendly.... And probably had previous owner before us. She may have been listed as a stray..... But a stray isn't that familiar with a leash already.
