Hubby diabetic 1

Hello! My hubby has type 1 diabetes, he was diagnosed a year ago. I was wondering if I could get some guidance? He is feeling disheartened at the moment, he keeps going into hypos. Or high (high 13, low 3ish) I think it’s because of the winter it acts differently but he’s not been good at injecting and waiting to eat. I also worry about how much sweets and biscuits he is eating to get out of his hypos, I know that’s what has been recommended but is this ok for his overall health? He’s very good at going to the gym and keeping fit but I worry about him, he has started freaking out about and ache saying he will loose his feet and eyes soon. There’s no evidence for this he has been told he is very fit and healthy and can lead a long normal life, he is scared though. Any advice ? ❤️

Hi, I can see if I can help. He might still be in what’s considered the honeymoon period. What insulin is he on? There’s some insulin that he has to wait 25 minutes to kick in and eat but there’s others you don’t. Is he carb counting? What are his ratios? When you have a hypo so low you can’t control what you eat as you’re starving and you just have to ride the high afterwards. You’re more than welcome to message me privately and we can talk about it and I can try and help you out. I’ve been diabetic since may 2022 and had a diabetic pregnancy too as well as completed the DAFNE course x

Hi it can be really tough, especially injecting as it doesn’t feel like a normal thing to do to yourself which can make you feel out of your comfort zone and having to inject for something as basic as eating just feels unfair sometimes! But I promise it gets easier almost like second nature I’ve been diabetic for 15 years now and it’s just something you do, I think you have to get in the headspace of you control your diabetes and it doesn’t control you. As for lows I tend to eat 5 haribo wait 20 mins and then have a snack but everyone’s reacts differently it can also be hard to stop eating when you’re low you automatically just want to eat anything in sight. Sounds like he looks after himself which is great has he got a CGM like Dexcom/ libre? Finding patterns can be really helpful. Hope you’re ok!

I don’t know if this helps, but I think all of us feel scared in the beginning. There is a huge learning curve. If he cares about himself (sounds like he does with his fitness already) and his family, he’ll get there. Just be patient. We all struggle or have struggled with overeating for hypos. Your brain is telling you you’re dying so working on controlling how much you eat to treat it takes time. I find a controlled amount like 1 JuiceBox, or 4 dex tabs, and putting on a 15min timer is a good start. Btw fast acting sugar and then a small snack with a bit of protein and fat is generally what’s recommended. He could take a look at Ginger Viera’s books and podcasts, as well as the JuiceBox pod if he likes podcasts while working out. Diabetes is new to him so he won’t lose his feet or eyes. That takes years of poor control and the fact that’s he’s panicking and health conscious means he’ll work hard to not have that happen :) Reach out anytime! I’ve been diabetic 25 years.
