Hey, radiographer here! It’s perfectly safe to get an ankle X-ray whilst pregnant, the dose is extremely low and won’t affect the baby! The areas we try and avoid in pregnancy are between the bottom of the chest and the knee. When you go for the X-ray tell the radiographer you’re pregnant and they’ll be able to explain it in more detail and should put you at ease! 😊
@Sarah thank you SO much!!!!
Heyyy, Doctor here…as others said it’s far away from the baby so exposure would be minimal. XRs give you the same dose of radiation as you get from a long haul flight to New York and most people don’t think twice about flying! It’s the more detailed scans like CTs that tend to give higher doses.
thank you! What about an MRI? This Xray is just to rule something out so I can be referred for the MRI!
They usually try and avoid MRI unless absolutely necessary but it’ll all depend on the doctor looking after you and the radiologist and whether they feel it’s warranted whilst pregnant. But if they do want you to have it still, the radiographers will make sure it’s nice and safe for you and baby 😊
I personally wouldn’t. Is it essential? x
