I don’t know if this is normal?

Live with my parents. When I throw something in the bin I have seen my dad on multiple occasions just opening and checking it. For example I bought food at work, so I binned the container today. And then I saw him opening it to check. And other things as well It just makes me so frustrated. When I told them they think it’s normal?!

Have they done this all your life or just recently??

I’d say over the last few months

Thats really odd then, if it's something they've done forever, it could just be a habit, but only starting recently is very weird

Something my parents would do. Sounds like a trust issue?? Maybe even safety issue?? Could just be curious about you. Are you all close?

What are they looking for?! I know people who are a bit paranoid about things going in the correct bin/recycling etc because their bin men have told them off. Could it be that?

Does he have trouble letting go of clutter? Hoarding becomes more common in middle and elderly age

Parents are nosey lol

I do this because all of my family bin stuff that is meant to be recycled lol No sinister reason just because I then recycle it

I would put a pregnancy test box in there and when they question you, you can ask why they keep looking after what your throwing away Or is that petty 😂

My mum does the same! In her case it's due to not having much when she was little due to rationing and being exceptionally poor. Whilst your parents are unlikely to be WW2 babies, perhaps it's been triggered by something in their background.

My dad started doing this when i quit a job and switched to something part time. It was always to see if i was "waisting money" getting something from the dollar menu

Honestly my dad would do the same to check it’s in the right recycling bin and there’s nothing stuffed inside 🙈 I wouldn’t even see the problem. Maybe just ask?

Not normal. Invasion of privacy and seems a bit controlling

Are they checking you are recycling? I would ask next time what it is he is looking for

You might be doing small things to irritate them maybe? I know when family visits and stays with us, they start to irritate me and then i will start LOOKING for things to be irritated about. Like "did you see she threw this in our bin?" "Why did she use a face cloth as a cleaning rag" etc
