Bathing newborn

So my babies umbilical cord has been off for a week or so now, but I am kinda terrified to bathe her.. the more I leave it the worse I feel, since I wouldn’t like to be left unbathed for that long, but it’s just such a nerve racking thing to do! I have heard newborns don’t need baths that often, but how long has people gone before giving their newborn a bath for the first time? Does anyone have any tips on how they bathed their little ones for the first time? I would much appreciate it 🩷

I know they can go a while without having a bath, just make sure you’re doing top to toe washes. Honestly though, bath time fast became my favourite part of the day my little girl loved them so much and got so much enjoyment from them.

Hold them gently and use the tap let the warm water run over their hair and body, you may be able to get a small baby bath to put in your bath, put a muslin over them to keep them warm whilst washing them

My 5 week old loves the bath but we didn’t bath her for a while (but did top to toe washes) … when she’s in the bath she loves it but the second we take her out she screams the house down. We put her straight into a towel and cwtch her in to keep her warm but nothing works :( x

I didn't give my guy his first bath until 3 weeks I was just doing tip to toe until then and I only bath him once a week now and he's 15 weeks old. He's got dry and sensitive skin as it is a bathing them everyday can dry there skin out even more. If u have someone at home to help you u can always have a bath with them the first time you do it, you need someone to take baby out of bath for you if ur in it as u don't want to try and get out together and u accidentally fall x

I put a muslin underneath him in his bath and another one over the top of him. Me and his dad used cups and his sponge to put water on him to keep him warm. We put his towels on the radiator and put the heating on to make sure the bathroom was like an oven haha. I also got into the bath with him and made sure the water was slightly over what they recommend. 37c water is not pleasant no matter how old you are 😂

I did my baby’s first at 3 weeks old, pop a muslin over them and keep wetting it to keep them warm, elbow in the bath to check the right temp and put their towel on the radiator for when they get out, have a nappy ready incase of any quick accidents 😂 I really built it up I don’t know why it’s not my first baby but it was honestly fine she loved it actually aha xx

I use a muslin and put it over them after it’s been in the water and then keep topping it up with warm water so they stay warm as mine use to scream without doing that

@Carla oh bless her!

Bathed mine at 5 days old the day we came home from the hospital as I wanted to wash the ‘hospital’ off of him, I bathed him once a week till he was about 4 months and then went to twice weekly and now I do everyday because I find his privates smell of wee otherwise even though I wipe with every nappy change. If I waited till the cord fell off I wouldn’t have bathed mine for 15 days 😂 if you have a partner or someone with you it makes bath time easier, one washes baby and then the other takes them with the towel and then you can both tag team on drying creaming nappy and pjs x

I always got in the bath with both of my little girls! Always used a muslin cloth over them and poured warm water over it as much as possible. I bathed both of my girls for the first time around 3 weeks old😊 My 7 week old loves the bath! Xx

My baby was having lots of baths in the first week because she wouldn't poo, but now she's 6 months and I maybe bath her once a fortnight... She hate a baths currently, and shes not a messy baby. She gets a cloth over her after dinner and she poos in the potty so never gets a poopy but!

I didn't bath my baby after she was born for like a month. She had the loveliest milk smell that went after her first bath. I do face and head first, dry. Then I to bath support their head, I have two wash clothes. One you make wet and over their belly to help keep them warm and the other to clean them. You can wash their back and bum, but it will get generally clean in the water when they're that little. Two towels, 1 to get the initial wetness off of them and the 2nd one to get them properly dry

@Charlotte your 6 month old poos in a potty?

@Carla my little one was the same! We found that getting her out the bath in a towel and then swapping her into a towel that had been on a towel rail or in the tumble drier for a couple of mins and so was a little warm really helped! I think it was the cold and now she’s happy to come out! Xxx

@Elena yes! And about 75% of wees are also in the potty! I've pottied her since 3 days old. Did the same with my son and he was out of nappies at 16 months.

@Charlotte how? I don’t get how you can know when they need to pee and poo at this age?

Our pediatrician said once a week, unless LO has a massive blow out and needs one. Our baby is almost a month old and we’ve found she doesn’t mind as much as long as the water is warm but she seems happiest when I just wash her in the shower with me (typically I will hand her out to my husband to get dried off and the shower myself). With the shower she really only gets mad for the few seconds she’s out of the water and not in the towel, then she’s happy as can be once she’s all wrapped up 😊

You need to wait for the belly button to heal to avoid infection. I also just wanted to say don’t hold under a running tap (someone else suggested this) as the tap could suddenly change temperature and scald them

Just rinse the baby in plain lukewarm water and wipe the baby gently in the bellybutton area. Don’t put off bathing the baby more often. Once a week bath is fine but three weeks or so is too much. Everyone needs to feel clean. Babies are human too. Anything more than a week is just too much.
