Dummy/pacifier

I’ve tried to remove dummy from my son today at nap time so we can wean him off it as he’s started waking in the night for it when he chucks it out of the cot. We tried the Frida system and it didn’t work. So braved it today. It was an almighty disaster, he screamed for over an hour until he was so distressed he started gagging on all his snot and vomited. I gave in and gavee it to him. Has anyone managed to successfully get their babies off them?
