Constipation/stool witholding

We've been struggling with this for several months now - we started potty training and my daughter was actively holding it and not wanting to poo because she was scared. Because she held it in, she got really constipated. Has anyone experienced this, and if so, what's worked? Thank you!

Yes, my son did this. We saw a doctor and a paediatrician and you have to put them on restoralax we give my son 3 teaspoons once daily and you have to stay on it for like a year so that their body gets used to regulating and they get used to the idea of pooping and it not hurting sometimes it can take longer

Thanks Sarah! How do you give it to him? My doctor suggested to put it in yoghurt but I have a hard time with her taking the full dose. Thanks so much

We just waited and let my daughter go poo in a diaper until she was comfortable enough to go poo in the potty. Took a couple of months.

Get a stool for her to have her put her feet on, restoralax if she hasn’t gone in two days, lots of fluids, we also did a rewards chart (gave a moana sticker for every time she went), also we had to use a suppository once but it helped when she didn’t go for a few days and i saw her holding it in. I would ask your gp about restoralax and the suppository first tho. My baby got constipated at 12 months while we went to an all inclusive and ever since then, started to hold her poo. Just wouldn’t go in her diaper so we started bringing her to a potty every time we saw her hold and get her knees up so she can poo. She’s 2.5 years old now so we explain to her to drink water and eat lots of veggies and fruits to help go poopoo and this helps her understand and be part of the process. Also don’t give any pressure when she has accidents, just move along with your day otherwise it will prob make them more anxious.

We also provide positive statements now when she goes like: wow! Your tummy must feel good! Looks like those veggies are helping you poo etc. we avoided praise her like saying she’s a good girl for pooing because we didn’t want her to feel like she was a bad girl if she didn’t poo. Hope this helps!

Yes, we are going through this right now. Our little girl was doing well with potty training, but then had a constipated poo that hurt and she has been withholding ever since. We have her on laxatives and also have suppositories from the doctor, and still, she refuses to go. Not sure what to do next. She can hold it for weeks, and it makes her miserable, which is taking the joy out of life for everyone 🤦‍♀️
