Colposcopy and IVF

Myself and my husband have reached the top of the IVF waiting list but unfortunately my smear test has just came back with high risk hpv and changes seen (this is now the 3rd year in a row) but the last twice no treatment was needed. I have a colposcopy booked next week. The timing could not be worse for us. Our ivf consultant needs the result of this colposcopy before proceeding with our IVF. I'm aware this time they may take a biopsy or burn some cells away. Has anyone else been in a similar situation and can offer me any reassurance? How long did you take to heal and did it delay your treatment by much? I'm also worried the high risk hpv may cause problems with our ivf. If anyone has this and has had a successful journey I would love to hear❤️ feel very apprehensive in what should be an exciting time for us.

In 2017 I had a colposcopy, biopsy and then LLETZ. it takes about a month to recover after the LLETZ treatment. But you may be delayed with waiting for the results and booking in treatment if you need it. We then TTC after this, but needed IVF (male factor not related to the treatment) in 2018 weeks had our consultation and I mentioned some pain / bleeding so they referred me for another biopsy and those came back clear so we were able to move ahead as normal. The colposcopy and LLETZ don’t cause any issues in IVF or getting pregnant. But I had a cervical check at 20 weeks as they burn your cervix away and it can become short. Fortunately mine was still ok. I now have a 10 month old. IVF still took a while for us due to the lack of good embryos in the first round and unfortunately a missed miscarriage in my fresh transfer next round before my daughter. But the LLETZ doesn’t interfere with IVF success or cause miscarriages these were down to the embryos.

@Danielle Ahh this all gives me reassurance. The letter says if I require treatment this would likely be offered there and then. So hoping they can just treat it next week if need be. How long did your biopsy results take? Thats also very reassuring they can check your cervix during pregnancy, as I was also worried this may be damaged by treatment or its function reduced by having hpv. Sorry to hear you miscarried and had a hard journey. We also have male factor infertility, did you have ICSI?x

@Amy I think it took about 4 weeks. But I think I then got in quite quickly after receiving the letter. I didn’t have HPV but my cervix was very sore and I had been having pain and bleeding. The biopsy showed I had high levels of precancerous cells. We did do ICSI. Our first round the eggs weren’t really mature 9 collected, 4 mature, 2 fertilised and both transferred day 3 and didn’t work. 2nd round I got 8 collected, all mature, 6 fertilised and 5 blasts. First was the miscarriage and the 2nd is my daughter with x3 left in the freezer. I had about 2.5cm removed from my cervix, but I was still left with 4cm which is counted as normal so I was discharged. But if it is thin they would either monitor you more closely or have a stitch put in.

@Danielle Oh wow that sounds scary, glad they caught it when they did and you were able to have it treated without delay. When we were there today, he said they would aim to create 3 embryos. The first attempt will be a fresh transfer and if needed second/third would be in a thaw cycle, so think I only have eggs retrieved once. We are new to it all so dont fully understand all the different parts of it, feel like they give so much information Thats good to know they will make sure to measure my cervix and monitor it if needed. Hoping it all works out okay

I had a LLETZ January 2020, it's a Minor day procedure. I had it done in my gynos office. It's a cone biopsy with a wire that burns away a layer of the cervix, my ob said it shouldn't be an issue with pregnancy, it may just mean they monitor you more closely and potentially put a stitch in your cervix so it doesn't open prematurely during pregnancy I fell pregnant that same year and had no issues and have a healthy almost 3 year old boy Best of luck to you 💙
