Mirena coil experience

I had the mirena coil fitted on the 16th May. I was due my period around the 27th May. I started bleeding on the 29th May so presumed my period had arrived, however it’s been 9 days and I’m still bleeding. some days lighter and some days heavy that I’m leaking so I put this down to irregular bleeding due to the coil. I’m due to go on holiday with the girls in 2 weeks and I’m terrified the bleeding won’t have stopped and I do not want to be around the pool and have to be constantly paronoid about leaking etc. Has anybody got any advice on what I can do? 🙁

I've not had the coil but I'm a Hypnotherapist helping women to rebalance their hormones. 1. Personally I feel the coil is the worst ever! I do not recommend my clients to go on that. 2. With any new hormone treatments or coming off your normal treatments it can cause turmoil and havoc to your regular hormones. It can take weeks or months to settle.. It's like withdrawal symptoms or going on new mental health medications. Your body needs to get used to the new treatment. You can't predict exactly what will happen to each individual or how long it will last, but if it's been going on too long for you, then change course. Only you can decide what is best for you. Also, if you look on Facebook, there are many merima coil awareness and side effects fb groups even support groups. Some stuff the NHS denies. I would not recommend it. Just my 2 cents.

I don't think there is much you can do. Maybe use bigger tampons then you usually would. That what I did. I had the coil fitted. Sadly longer periods of bleeding can happen in the first 3-6 months. I bled for weeks without it stopping. It stopped at some point. Now I have really light periods and a friend of mine has no periods at all anymore. Maybe ask your gyno or GP if there is something you can do? I hope it stops before you go on holiday 🤞

I’ve had the copper coil and mirena coil quite a few times in my life, i am in no way an expert on this but heres my take and advice. Because it’s a foreign object in your body, essentially your body is kinda trying to flush it out, so to speak. So the first period might be heavier or longer, but it soon dies down, mine stopped completely. If you’re not in any other pain, I personally wouldnt worry too much. If you’re still bleeding in say 5 more days, so thats 2 weeks of bleeding, i’d definitely go get checked up, make sure it’s in position correctly. You 100% shouldn’t still be bleeding by the time you go away. In terms of hormones, all that the coil release are local, meaning they do their job in the area they are in and only very small amounts enter other parts of your body, so I wouldn’t worry about anything hormonally. X

Thank you girls that’s really helpful to know!! I started to regret getting it but I got it because I’ve been on many different contraception’s over the years and wanted to try something longer term since I don’t want anymore babies. Just waiting for my husband to decide he wants the snip 🤣 I might book an apt with the gp on Monday to see if they can prescribe me something to stop or settle the bleeding so I’ve definitely got something in time for when I go away but hopefully it’ll stop by the time I go away x

See you GP as they can give you some meds to help settle it, at least while you’re on holiday. It’s pretty common so don’t worry, it’s just a settling in period ☺️
