Yes, so my son, who is the same age, is speech delayed. He was delayed in walking and showing signs of autism, so he's been working with early intervention. He sees an occupational therapist and a behavioral therapist. He's gotten a lot better. He just started speech therapy once a month. I would continue to monitor and have him evaluated to see if he could benefit from speech therapy. I was told to stay consistent, keep practicing throughout the day, and try sign language, I guess, to help them with understanding and communicating. Early intervention can help you, but they only work with children up to age 3, so you would need to contact them very soon. It's free for the majority, but I think it's income based, I'm not 100% sure, though. Best of luck!
Same here, I would recommend to start with teaching child to answer yes/no first. Ask something obvious like “want tv on?” Answer yourself Yes, nod head, make sure child watches your movements. Hopefully this will help a bit. Definitely ask for a speech therapist referral to help her functional language
Mine is 2.5 and only really says mom and no, she can communicate nonverbally for the most part and has said full sentences probably about a handful of times. She’s excelled with all of her other milestones though, just the speech communication seems to be what’s hard for her. She gets frustrated frequently since she doesn’t have the words. We have her in speech therapy right now:) it’s been going well so far!
@Jen what were the signs of autism?
This is exactly the same as my little boy although he will be 4 in October! He has all the words, can count and read and starting to write letters but he just can’t converse! He’s great at singing songs but will just repeat 99% in general conversation! It’s why potty training hasn’t been fully successful because he can’t tell me he needs to go. Can’t tell me he’s hungry. I’ve managed to get him to say “drink please” if he needs a drink and he likes “no” He’s on the waiting list for speech therapy although think he might have already started school by the time that happens so no advice but just to say you aren’t alone!
