Screen time

How long do you let your child on their tablets for as I'm trying to monitor mine but if I take it away he has a massive meltdown 😕

So the iPad is a rare occasion (long journeys, waiting for dinner at a restaurant etc) but tv is on more than I like to admit to be honest. Half the time he’s not even watching it and is doing his own thing but soon notices if I turn it off. Lately we’ve noticed a real decline in his behaviour so we try to give him some time in the morning whilst he’s waiting for his breakfast and then he has 30-60 mins in the evening watching Bluey before his bedtime routine starts. Honestly I know everyone is negative about screen time etc but it’s a different world now, my sons nursery use iPads so he’s very familiar with them and he only goes 2 days a week so sometimes it feels like a losing battle

We are very similar with @Abbie his tablet is only used for long journeys and at restaurants (I really don't care what people think, it works for us). At home, the TV is on quite a lot but he only really sits to watch it when he's "chilling" before nap or bedtime and when he gets up in the mornings x

We use our phones for a quick song on YouTube for any poo nappy changes plus about 30-40min of cbeebies on the TV while I cook dinner. Plus on the weekends I sometimes watch David Attenborough with him for about 30-60min when he wakes at 5.30am! I think the guidance for 2yr olds is no more than an hour per day and preferably in small chunks of 10-15min. I follow the strategy of talking to him about what he's watching before I'm about to turn it off and tell him it's the last episode, last minute etc. the meltdowns vary, not usually more than 2min of grumpiness. More if I haven't given enough warning.

Tbh the tv is on all day long in our house as background noise. My boy will watch thw programmes he likes and plays with his toys when he's not interested. I'm not putting any preassure on it. I think next year he will be starting nursery and won't be able to watch tv so freely so it won't be an issue.
