Too soon

Is 37 weeks too soon for a c section? I'm currently 33 weeks and I have mild Anemia. I am starting to take iron medicine but I'm worried baby won't be ok. Should I be worried that she won't be ok?

My friend had an emergency c section at 37 weeks, her daughter had breathing difficulties and was in the special care unit for three days, but is now absolutely fine and thriving. I’ve been wondering the same thing for myself though, I have anaemia and am having infusions (Second lot this week), and I also have really bad anxiety, and I just want my daughter out as soon as humanly possible x

Mild anemia is normal during pregnancy. Concentrate on your diet. https://www.hematology.org/education/patients/anemia/pregnancy

I'm really anxious this will be my second c section. First was due to baby being big but this one I don't see a reason for it.

If it’s mild I don’t think you should worry too much. If it was really a concern the doctors would have been telling you to take iron supplements, and eat plenty of iron rich foods months ago.

@Aliyah Renae that's what I don't understand but I am taking iron medicine

Did they ever say your iron looks too low and were concerned?

Your baby will be okay. 37weeks for a cesarean is pretty early for such a mild issue. I would discuss with your doctor and ask them their reason why a repeat cesarean and why so early. Typically repeat cesareans are done at 39weeks. Are you looking to do a VBAC?

@✨Wis 🇭🇹 I want a vbac but they are apparently worried about her size when I just had a scam and they said baby was average

@Aliyah Renae no they said it was a little bit low

What did your first baby weight? A “big baby” can carry higher risks for a VBAC but it depends on how far along you are , if your OBGYN is truly VBAC friendly and also how you labor and push tbh

I still think you’ll be okay especially since you’re taking iron so you’re doing the right thing. I’ve been anemic and my pregnancy has made it worse and they’ve been telling me since day 1, and you’re already far in your pregnancy and they’re just now saying something, you have some time to resolve it still. Plus from what I’ve heard low iron affects you more than it affects the baby, so baby should be okay.

@✨Wis 🇭🇹 first baby was 6 days early and was 8 pounds (vaginal). 2nd was 10 pounds 8.1 oz and c section. This one my tummy is definitely smaller that my last pregnancy and baby is head down.

Scans are available often wrong when it comes to baby’s size. If that’s the only reason they want a c section at 37 weeks, I would personally wait another week or 2.

@Ellen I have a regrowth ultrasound the 4th of next month but size and mild anemia are the only reason they want me to have a c section

My son was 9lbs 2 oz and I had no trouble pushing him out. I also had low iron but I changed my diet and it went up within a week.

@Day yeah I don't eat breakfast or lunch bc I had weight loss surgery 2 years ago and my stomach is literally the size of a banana. I did start taking my iron medicine tonight

Mild anemia isn’t a reason for significant medical intervention such as c section. Ask for an iron transfusion first. My baby is measuring FOUR weeks ahead, so she’s measuring 42 weeks now when I’m 38 weeks. But ob is not worried about it, as he mentioned scans are often wrong especially at the end

I think a lot of people have c sections at 37 weeks! From 37 weeks you are full term anyway x

My levels were low pretty much my whole pregnancy, even tho I was taking iron tablets throughout! I had a c section at 39+2 and ended up needed a blood transfusion after, my baby hasn’t been affected by my lack of iron it was just me after I had her!

I had an emergency c section at 37+4 I was induced at 37 weeks and my sister also had a planned c section at 37 weeks. My little boy was fine, he was jaundice but that is quite common. My sisters little girl needed oxygen at first but she was absolutely fine as well. Try not to worry too much, babies are classed as full term at 37 weeks so they do tend to be OK x

Thanks for everyones help
