Derby maternity unit vs chesterfield?

I'm due next year and derby is my default nominated hospital as it's the nearest but rated "inadequate" by the cqc! Chesterfield is further but at least "good". Anyone got recent experience with either?

Not with the maternity unit but I went to derby one time (as I work in derby) in early pregnancy due to bleeding, I had also had a car accident the day before, and they were so unhelpful and basically said if I needed care they wouldn’t offer it to me because I’m not registered there and I would need to travel back home (40 mins minimum) to go to my registered hospital if I needed basically anything other than my obs taken. That’s after I had been moved around 3/4 times already and had been there a few hours. Luckily it was nothing serious and I’m 37 weeks now but if you’re thinking of registering at Chesterfield instead just be aware that you may have to travel there for any other issues as well if you ever have any and need to attend as a walk in X

I gave birth at Derby last year and they were absolutely amazing 🩷

i went to derby for fetal medicine she was amazing. but when i went to triage for reduce movements/bleeding/ pain etc i was mocked at, one time i thought i was contracting and i was crying in pain (pain doesn’t usually bother me) and was begging to be checked and she just laughed at me point blank and said stop it. i didn’t bother. i moved hospitals anyways but i hated it for triage. plus being a extremely high risk and being laughed at got me extremely angry

I was due an induction a few weeks ago at derby. Took 4 days for them to turn around and tell me they are too busy and transferred me to burton hospital. I gave birth in Burton.

Personally I wouldn't have another baby at Derby, they absolutely didn't listen to me at all, which resulted in a traumatic birth.

I know it's not one of the options. But I gave birth in Burton and I could not fault them one bit. From start to finish they were amazing. I have severe HG and was looked after so well and never felt belittled or annoying to them. I've heard a lot of bad things from derby, but I think they are a big hospital and have a lot of patients there. Burton was just small and nice and compact

@Emily I gave birth just over a week ago & I would say the same. Cannot fault Burton.

@Charlee I had exactly the same experience at Derby and I wouldn't have another baby there either.

I have a two week old and couldn’t fault the experience I had at the birth centre at Derby

I’ve had two births at Derby (Jan 2023 and May 2024) and both times the midwives who delivered my babies were amazing. But my pregnancies and births were relatively straightforward. I had things that maybe annoyed me a little about my first (she wouldn’t check how dilated I was for 4 hours when I got there as it was my first and she thought I wouldn’t be in active labour, which I was), but then she finished her shift and I ended up with the midwife who would help deliver my daughter and she was amazing. I know other people who have had good experiences there, I know others who have had terrible. I think it’s the same everywhere you go to be honest

I've had all 5 of mine at derby 06, 09, 2 in 12(not twins) and 23. The midwives were nearly all amazing, had a traumatic birth with my 5th which ended up in me being in HDU for 12 hours but in the lead upto that they were fab and couldn't do enough for me, after my 4th they were negligent I gave birth and they left me for 4 hours I showered myself stripped and remade the bed and my baby nearly died due to respiratory failure that they failed to pick up on until I was moved up onto the ward and a midwife within 10 minutes of me being up there called for the crash team and he was then rushed to NICU for 3 weeks... with no apologies it hadn't been picked up sooner.

I gave birth in the midwife unit at derby at my experience was very good, they seemed to follow my birth plan that I handed over a copy of, however I had a straightforward birth. Pregnancy yoga helped me.

I had a c-section at Derby in March this year and I couldn’t fault the care I received. The midwives were amazing as was everyone in theatre. I was worried for the exact same reason and read the report which didn’t feel me with confidence but they were all wonderful. I went in a few times as I was worried about babies movements and they never made me feel silly and always encouraged me to come in if something didn’t feel right. Thankfully my little girl was always fine I was just overly anxious. I would say whatever hospital you choose just always make sure to speak up and advocate for yourself. But I had a great experience. I think everyone’s is different and a lot depends on the staff you’re seen by. Maybe I was lucky that I was always seen by lovely, friendly staff. Apart from one radiographer who was a bit rude but I put it down to her having a bad day. X

@Charlee @Laura I definitely feel the same as you both and mine was Derby too. It was the midwifes way or no way and it also lead to me to being in HDU for 24 hours too.

@Charlotte oh no 😔 I ended up in HDU too, they didn't believe me when I said I needed to push, and told me I didn't (without checking) and to just wait until my elective section time slot... Needless to say when they did finally check I was 10cm and baby was born within 15 mins... Not via elective section 😔

I’ve had a recent experience with the midwife team at Derby hospital and it was a mixed bag of a team really - had multiple midwife’s. Originally I was going to birth at the birth centre however I wasn’t fully dilated or having contractions after my waters broke, so was told to come back the next day for an induction. I went to my appointment at 9pm and they failed to induced me after hours and I ended up getting contractions around 11:30, but didn’t think they were regular as I was having back labour. It wasn’t until I was put on the labour ward after hours and hours of being in pain breathing in an induction room full of ladies that had been induced where we found out her back was on my back and I was started using gas and air. It was traumatic until I was brought into that room and the midwife’s from 7am took over. But for saying I was there at 9pm I had to wait 8 hours for them to place me in a labour room. 😫
