Alcohol when breastfeeding

I had a few drinks yesterday evening and had expressed milk for the night as I knew I wouldn’t be able to breastfeed. My partner woke me in the night however to let me know he’d accidentally spilled all the milk. On autopilot I just breastfed the baby directly and now I feel terrible and so guilty as there was definitely still alcohol in my system. Anyone else been in a similar situation? I’m not sure I could have waited to feed her but I’m wondering if there is another better way to have handled this? I feel so guilty!

This is okay. It sounds like you did the absolute best with the situation at hand. Unless you were heavily intoxicated the % passed to your milk was minimal, especially after a few hours. The below has some useful and hopefully reassuring info: https://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/factsheet/alcohol/

As long as you weren’t falling down wasted you’re completely fine to breastfeed, no need to ‘pump & dump’. I had a Henry Weston yesterday and BF like normal. Midwives these days say If you can hold baby you can feed baby!

You have to have drank a lot for it to be a problem usually and that's more for the safety of holding your baby. It sounds like you weren't drunk and fed baby fine, there wont be any problems ❤

He spilled ALL the milk?!?

I think I’d cry finding out my partner spilled all the milk. But yeah like Allie said, a lot of midwives these days say if you can hold the baby you can feed the baby. Only small amount pass through to your milk and even then baby’s body will also process it so even less is going into their blood stream. As long as you’re not drinking excessively you’re fine

@Sharon words were had. Even after he explained again this morning how it happened I cannot understand how anyone can be so clumsy

I’m impressed you didn’t kill him on the spot.
