Worrying my little one is behind

Arghhh - I was determined not to worry so the my second… but here we are 🙃 He’s just turned 1 (2nd October), and physically wise he’s doing great. He’s walking unaided, he crawls (not so much now he walks), can climb and is generally good in that way. But his communication seems behind. He doesn’t seem to understand much at all. He was clapping, but now does a clapping action but without clapping, he points, he gives high fives and can do “oh so big”. Oh and he plays peak-a-boo with his towel. He won’t wave. He says “bird” but everything is a bird but he doesn’t understand anything? If I ask him to get me something he just looks blankly at me, even if I ask where daddy is, he doesn’t look for him. And same if my partner asks where I am. Anyone else’s little one like this?! My eldest could do so much more at this age!

I think he’s doing PLENTY… try not to compare your kids they’re totally different people. Your baby is walking and climbing at a year old…he’s absolutely not behind. Some things take a back seat while they’re focusing on learning other things, the mental aspect will probably catch up now that he’s mastered his walking etc just continue to talk and read to him, point everything out, encourage him with lots and lots of praise but absolutely don’t compare him he sounds like he’s doing amazing. So are you so stop being hard on yourselves - I know it’s difficult but if you’re really worried speak to health visitor at your next appointment( they’ll be doing the assessment anyway I think between 13&15 months??) so they can keep you right but to me he sounds well on track x

You’ve got to remember every baby is different. My little boy isn’t walking, he’s cursing and crawling. All he can say is mama dada and nana. He doesn’t understand in the sense of “can you get me this” etc but can copy actions. Your little one only turned 1 the other day and he’s got plenty of time for his communication to come on. Some children excel in one development area first while the others not so much. Because he’s learnt so much of his physical development his communication has took a back seat. I wouldn’t worry too much, he’s still so little and some children’s take longer than others in certain areas :)

Thank you 🩷 My area do checks at 10 months, he had it at just short of 11 months. They did say he failed the communication part because he wasn’t saying 3 words but he wasn’t 12 months so they weren’t concerned. He babbles mamamam dadadada rararara, nananana and lalalala randomly, but doesn’t associate anything with them. And then says “bird”. I think it’s how he just seems confused all the time. Like doesn’t understand anything! He loves his brother and wants to do everything he does, follows him, tries to play etc. hopefully he comes on x

@Sammy my little boy is at the same stage communication wise by the sounds of it - he only waves on his terms 🤣 he can shake his head to say no but he doesn’t really care much for talking, I’m not concerned because he is SO on the go and if your little one is walking already that’s amazing. Xx

My little girl is 1 (3rd October) and is the same! Physically she can do all your little one can, walking unaided is a bit wobbly but can! Her communication was considered in the normal area for the 9-12 month check, but she mainly says mama, baba, dada, rara etc but can understand some things, but hasn’t yet said a proper “word” and we read so many stories and point things out all the time. But again, we try to sign lots and she uses them but doesn’t understand the meaning of them yet. I work in a nursery so I’m not too worried as I know every child is different and developed differently❤️

My little boy is 1 (also 2nd october) and is very similar to yours but I would say my little boy is slightly behind compared to your little one from what you’ve posted! Mine has clapped twice, only says “ba” and “ga” and doesn’t point. They’re all so different and I’m not too worried at this point, I was worried a few months ago as he was a late crawler but he’s come on leaps and bounds since starting nursery! X

My boy was born on the same day and well if yours is behind then so is mine... also walking but no words at all. Never pointed ever. Claps when happy, waking up, when we sing wind the bobbin or happy and you know it (sometimes stomps) and sometimes just from the melody of happy and you know it. Used to do peekaboo with towel but is over that lately. Will give things if asked but sometimes he ignores us or gives a different thing. He knows come to mummy but sometimes ignores me. I'm not worried I think they just need a bit more time! Keep doing what you're doing

@Alex just want to say he is absolutely NOT behind either he’s doing amazing being able to do all that. Some babies don’t even babble they just talk so genuinely this app is amazing but it’s also hard to see things other babies are doing and compare. My wee girl id say is kinda advanced in many things (she’s a girl, miss independent and her mothers daughter hahaha I didn’t do anything tbh just gave her my attitude) but she’s never pointed yet, she’s 1 in a few weeks and claps, walks (runs more like!) she said mum dad Archie (dog) woof, shoes, hiya, - she waves hi and bye on command, wee performing monkey but I’ve got the same niggles sometimes when I see babies dancing or something like why do we do this to ourselves. Our babies are doing so blooody well 😭😭 and we’ve made it a year raising them like we should be celebrating hahaha x

@Megan it’s so hard! My little one dances to music but says nothing like your daughter, all so weird! He obviously understands some things because he does “oh so big” and puts his arms up, plays peak-a-boo just doesn’t understand easier things like where’s the…. X

@Sammy I think honestly he’s right on track he sounds like he’s doing brilliant xx

Girl, he just turned 1 just like my little. He sounds like he’s doing quite well. Just continue to do all the things that aid in his development. In no time he’ll be using more words and understanding a lot more ✨
