Any UK dentists here? I’m desperate🥲🙃
Hey guys, i really need some advice on the NHS bandings and costs of treatment. I never had any major issues (except braces for overcrowding/small jaw & 2 impacted top wisdom teeth which got removed) until I was pregnant and ever since then, I have problem after problem 😭
My biggest issue is my first molar which is abscessed (root canal booked for Nov 7th, this was booked in August and apparently the earliest they could do🥲🫠). I saw my dentist on Wednesday after having a few days of pain in my very top left back tooth (not wisdom, has those removed, it’s 2 behind the abscessed one). It’s changed position slightly due to the wisdom tooth removal and one corner is now acting like a high point when trying to bite or chew. Dentist said she didn’t want to touch or file it and there’s the most faintest shadow there on an X-ray under the filling in that tooth. No abscess there that she could see and she prescribed amoxicillin, 1 x thrice a day for 5 days. Pain when I bite/chew is immense so I’m on a soup and yogurt diet for time being. I noticed this morning that I have swelling on the roof of my mouth on that side that wasn’t there yesterday, so I’m guessing an abscess as can’t just be coincidence. It’s squishy at the largest point and streaks red/white towards the gum line and is harder there. Fleshy pink, not red or puslike but came on overnight and makes swallowing difficult in the sense that it’s painful. I’m salt water rinsing and taking the antibiotics as advised but no let up so far. Due to the level of pain and the fact that my dentist couldn’t book a root canal in any sooner, I am also on 100mg Carbamazepine twice a day to manage the nerve pain and have been for 6 weeks now.
I’m wanting to call my dentist to ask for an emergency appt regarding the swelling on the roof of my mouth but as a single mum, I can’t for the life of me afford a third emergency appointment fee. Considering it’s either a progression of what I attended for on Wednesday, or a progression on the one awaiting root canal, will I be charged again or would it count as the same course of treatment? I’m so ready to just cut and drain it myself because the pain is making me want to jump off a bridge (not suicidal, don’t panic, I just can’t bare the pain anymore). I’m terrified enough of the fact it’s almost £80 for the root canal, especially knowing I can’t afford the crown after so having to fork more out right now on this is just tipping me over the edge.
I’ve tried to apply for help towards NHS costs as I’m on UC and only part time working but they said my disposable income against gov’s calculator is enough so that’s not an option either. I just feel really stuck and I don’t know what else to do…i don’t want to sit in a&e and waste their time or clog up their waiting room when there’s people in genuine need that end up waiting longer due to its misuse but I feel like I have no other option rn.
Thank you in advance to anyone who read the entirety of my desperation here and to anyone who has any advice/can help. I can post a pic but i just find it gross so would rather just keep it without unless someone would need it to help. Thank you everyone 🩵
@Labiba sorry to tag but I saw you comment on someone else’s that you don’t get notifications 🙈 I don’t suppose you have any idea on what to do? The swelling on the roof of my mouth has doubled in size so eating and drinking anything is just immensely painful🤕. I’ve called 111 to ask for help and waiting on a clinician because I’ve taken 3+ different medications to control the pain. Also is there any crown alternatives you can recommend because when I do eventually get this root canal done, I won’t be able to afford the crown on top 🥲 x
