Hey ladies. I'm 19+2 and I had my anatomy scan yesterday. Baby boy was very active and she measured most things. She is concerned that my cervix is shorter than what it's supposed to be and it's funneling. I have to go back next week to check length. I asked about a cerclage and he said if it's shorter we'd do the suppositories first then the cerclage if needed. Any advice?

In my opinion, I would try to push for the cerclage. I started getting monitored at 16 weeks and at 19 weeks I was 1 cm dilated when I had to get an emergency cerclage. I was doing the suppositories, but it wasn’t helping the situation. So I would try to push for it if it continues to get shorter and before you get to 24 weeks because after that, they won’t do it anymore.

@Abby i have read that they have to do it before 24 weeks. Do you know if there's a specific reason why they can't do it after 24 weeks? If the doctor next week refuses to do the cerclage what can I do?

I had a scan at 18 weeks where mine was measuring 2.5cm which is the cut off for further action etc. I’ve been prescribed the progesterone pessaries to take twice a day and in the scans since it’s stayed the same at 2.5cm so no need for cerclage. 3.6cm length isn’t a cause for concern (the funnelling may be) but I wouldn’t worry too much until the outcome of the next scan 🤞🏻

@Alexis there is a risk even before 24 weeks 1/12 procedures to fit the stitch result in waters breaking. So that's one reason why they won't do it after 24 weeks, another is in the UK a pregnancy is classed as "viable" after 24 weeks too. I had my cervical measurements and they came at 1.9cm/19mm. They said anything less than 2.5cm in UK they fit a stitch. When they did the operation, they found I only had 10mm/1cm left. I'm not going to lie it's been a rough journey since 16 weeks when they fitted it for me. But I don't think I'd have made it to today without it. I'm now 24+5 weeks 🙏🏽 and praying my cervix and stitch holds up for longer. I've also started funnelling now too, but not right the way down to the stitch yet. Im not dilated thankfully, my cervix is still closed 🙏🏽 my cervix is short due to LLETZ procedure I had in 2018. x x

@Alexis I think it’s because a baby reaches viability at 24 weeks, so worst case senerio the baby is born at that time, its chances of survival is high if they start you on steroids to help develop babies lung. There’s a lot of options and intervention. Continue your progesterone, no sexual activity and hopefully you won’t need the cerclage.
