Potty training

I started potty training my almost 27 month old yesterday and she did really well. I took her nappy off and put some leggins on. She knows when she’s had an accident but isn’t able to tell me when she needs to go yet. She doesn’t like the potty and prefers the toilet. I take her to the toilet regularly. So yesterday (Monday)- 2 accidents, 3 wees in the toilet. Today (Tuesday) it seems she’s gone backward! She’s had 3 accidents and no wees in the toilet. Plus she normally poos once a day and hasn’t for 2 days now. I’m worried and stressed now that potty training isn’t working and she might be holding her poo. Any advice/tips please 🙏🏽

If she's not able to tell you that she needs a wee and doesn't recognise that she needs a wee, I'd say she's not quite ready yet. Keep an eye on her to notice the cues she gives off when she needs the toilet. Fidgeting, going somewhere quiet, going quiet herself.. As for going backwards, it's only day 2. She's going to do lots of steps forward, lots of steps back, and then lots back forward again. It's all part of the process x

I’m waiting for my boy to have better communication to tell me before he needs to go, sounds like your little girl might need abit longer x

@Becky I thought she would learn how when she needed to pee once she starts to feel the sensation of it and the wetness when she has accidents otherwise she would never know when she has a nappy on. She knows when she’s had a poo and usually tells us

I spoke to my hv about this and she said yep absolutely ready at 2, mine can’t say she needs a wee but did appear some what embarrassed when she accidentally did a wee on me before her bath, to start training they don’t always show all the signs, give her puree’d apple or oats to help push through the poo but it’s all new and expected, give it a week or so. She’ll hopefully do a poo in the next day or two. Good luck 🤞

I'd start with nothing on the bottom half to get them used to the sensation and have freedom to just sit down and use the toilet before introducing leggings as that's a different skill entirely. As soon as there is something on the skin they think they can use it like a nappy.

@Cara thank you so much. This has made me feel a lot better!

@Natalie I wanted to do this but I live with my husbands parents and his siblings and neices come over every day so I can’t have her with nothing on from the bottom down

Could you not do a dress so nothing from the waist down feeling wise but covered when playing?

@Natalie I was thinking this! But wont the wee just go everywhere as well. With leggins on, not much wee comes out onto the floor lol

I found when my daughter had nothing underneath she always went to the potty. Leggings are just a barrier so it's less cleaning but they struggle to learn because there is another step for them to do before they can wee. Whereas with nothing they can just sit and go.

I agree with Natalie, and could recommend “oh crap potty training” book for more details

@Snezhana that’s what I’m trying to follow roughly, not exactly. Is it better to just gradually potty train her instead?

I tried potty training her without this system for several months, unsuccessfully unfortunately 😅 with this book we ve done it within 1 week, no accidents at home. Some accidents but outside still

@Snezhana did you do completely bare from bottom down too? I’ve started doing a few hours at home with no nappy but with trousers on and she still has accidents after 6 days of it but she doesn’t like being wet once she’s peed and is aware she’s done it on the floor
