Learning to wipe bum

At what point do we start teaching toddlers to wipe their own bum? 3.5 year old has been potty trained since Easter, but that was all a challenge enough without including wiping! Any tips on how to do it?

We can teach anytime and keep teaching, but I will help when I can, till she gets better. Right now, it feels like her arms are not long enough to reach

My little girl is nearly 4 and we’ve not started working on this yet but I’ve saved this for when I get round to it. They do encourage wiping at her nursery (but she’s yet to do a 💩 there 😂🙈) https://www.instagram.com/p/C9wav5xMtqR/?igsh=cmNycTZ1dDFmZ3V2

Also, re their arms not being long enough… I’m sure I read somewhere that their arms aren’t really long enough to wipe their bum until around age 5. But this was years ago that I read this, so no idea how true that is, but makes sense because my little girl can barely reach back there 😂🙈

My 5yr old boy has only learnt/can now do it himself! He does get me to check x

I’ll be honest, my daughter is 4 years 10 months old and I still mainly do it, her arms just don’t seem long enough so it ends up in a big mess. We are working on it though.

I taught my son to wipe around 4yo, he wasn’t good at it but I let him do it and I’d finish it. Using wipes helps until they get it.

My 1.5 yr old wipes pee. I still help for poop. But having them involved as much as possible

My 3 year old does it himself, I think incorporating it right along helps and if you haven't done it that is fine but maybe the next kid you can help do that earlier as they are learning the whole routine. So how I taught him is let him rip the paper, fold or crumple it, then show him one wipe and then let him do the next wipe until it is clean. I used to check as the last wipe but for awhile we have been showing our confidence in him saying "you get the last wipe" and ending things there.

My girl is a little over 3 and and has been potty trained for nearly a year now. Up until recently I would voice what I’m doing, I’ve wiped there’s something on the paper so I will fold it and wipe again - now it’s clean so all done and throw it in the toilet. She now is wanting to and I ask her to just say it out loud too and usually after she’s “tried” I do a check and see that she’s got it all. Her nursery won’t wipe for them so she tries (unsuccessfully) there more and more
