Autism

Hi mum's. Any of you have any autistic children? My son shows signs and I am wondering how you go about getting support. I have previously been to the doctors as he was constantly stratching his face and we spoke about it but they advised too young to diagnose. I must admit I do not know alot about it but I can see my son is different, he doesn't like loud sounds, gets extremely overwhelmed in certain situations. He sensory seeks throwing himself around and rolling and sliding on the floor. He has also started to lick things from windows to bath water and the fish tank 🙈 He has since started talking gibberish when he can communicate. On the flip side he does play with other children, talks well and is very loving so I am unsure. Any help or advise would be welcome thank you ❤️

Show your support

I'm in the same boat at the moment. I have a long list on my phone of all the things I've noticed all signs of autism. I believe my boy is on the spectrum but they have turned down 2 refferals by the doctor because his age. We have been referred for speech and language and have our first appointment Wednesday so I'm hoping they may pick up on what I see with him and help me get a refferal x

We went through our health visitor and she's referred us to speech and language who can make the referral but takes a bit longer. But now his nursery are doing his referral and we have support from early years team :) they've recently submitted a form in the hope to get extra funding to give him extra support in nursery xx

We did initially go to the drs who said because of his age (went back in Nov last year) to go through the health visitor. Nursery and early years have been the best help though xx

@Hayley thank you, yes I need to speak with nursery about it and see what they think also xxx

@Kaitlunn hopefully all goes well on Wednesday for you xxx

People who can help you with a referral are health visitors, nurseries, childminders and drs. I'm a school SENCo and Early Years teacher and it really grinds me when professionals say children are "to young" for a referral as it's just not true and part of the SEND code of practice is early identification so I would ask to see a different Dr if you wish to pursue it through your GPs. Children can often be turned down for a referral because they are still in early development and some areas of development develop faster than others, having a professional conduct your 3 year assessment will help. You can also ask for referral to speech and language teams and occupational therapy teams to rule out developmental delay. The other option you have is something called 'right to choose' which is where you can choose to get a private firm to assess your child under the NHS. I suggest googling it.

@Rebecca thank you ☺️❤️
