Cmpa or lactose intolerance?…

My little one is 11 weeks and we’ve tried so many different milks to try and help his constipation…the paediatrition has prescribed sma Athera, which we’ve been on for 2.5 weeks, initially he went 2 days in a row then nothing for a week so we had to add in the laxatives again, so at this point, I’m not sure if it’s working or not but I’ve had to add carobel tonight because of the amount of sick is ridiculous…which will no doubt make him constipated again and defeat the object 🫠 Annnnyway…Is there an easy way to tell which he has? Cmpa or lactose intolerance? Gp and HV are no help at all. And if this doesn’t work I’d like to try a lactose free one anyway, does anyone have any recommendations pls?

Althera still has milk protein in so I think the next ones to try would be amino acid also carobel can cause constipation too so bare than in mind!

Aptimal Pepti 1 has a lactose trace and Nutramigen supposedly has no lactose. The first stage of formula they try though is still made from hydrolysed milk protein - this means it should be broken down to digest 🤷‍♀️. If you’re not happy with one prescription formula - they can change it. We’ve been through 4 now 😅. Next stage is the completely milk free ones. He’s not able to have breast milk as even with me being dairy free, the lactose produced by breastmilk was making him bleed 😔. Our doctors have advised that you can tell when a formula isn’t right, waiting it out isn’t the right thing to do. The SMA one was awful for our little boys CMPA 😓, so moved to the Aptamil which he seems to be doing better on but not quite right, so got another review on Friday. Hope you find the right thing soon 🤞🏻.

So lactose intolerance is very rare in babies and usually hospitalised them as far as I've read Changing formula to often can also add to constipation so I'd definitely try to stick one out as they can take 6 weeks to help It could be a different issue all together though if the milks don't start helping if you end up on a aa one so I'd definitely also be pushing for some tests if that's the only symptom baby is having

@Emma-louise thanks! Do you have any thoughts on what the tests would possibly find though?

@Emma-louise my dietician for my boys told me that LI isn’t that rare/actually is pretty common these days, both my boys have had severe (especially my now 8 month old) LI to the point they referred us to the allergy clinic. I have also never heard of LI hospitalising a baby, so this is news to myself :) OP We’ve been through many different formulas for my youngest, as we did think it was CMPA althogether, and he has ended up on Neocate Syneo due to dropping to 2nd centile for weight as well as other symptoms. We have tried Althera, Alfamino, Pepti 1 and now this (as well as high street formulas) and by the time we finally got his milk sorted he was 4 months old and progressing milestones slowly to the point he has ‘behind’ and was almost like having a baby 2 months younger than he was. Anyway, there’s not much of a way I know of to differentiate between the two issues, but I hope your little one gets sorted and feel free to message me if you need to xx

@Jayde it's only what I've read from people who have been doing this whole cmpa thing longer than myself Something about how a baby ia supposed to be able to gave lactose due to it being in mum's milk or something Honestly I only know about li in adults as my partner has it and then baby has cmpa Someone also said something along the lines of when people ask if it an intolerance or allergy that that's an outdated way of looking at it as its now ige or non ige Could I just ask if they think it's lactose not cmpa why would an allergy clinic be needed as it's not classed as an allergy ( don't mean for it to sound rude generally asking)

@Emma-louise it was originally suspected allergy not LI so sent us to the clinic to double check (he’s 8 almost 9 months) but it’s just come back as a severe intolerance that they suspect we can help build up very VERY slowly. And of course I didn’t mean to sound rude when I said it’s pretty common, again just what I’ve heard 🙃
