Toddler speech

Hey! I have a wonderful, social, active and happy 19 month old boy. Over the past 7 months I have heard him say roughly 30 words. With maybe 10-12 that he uses daily. My concerns are.. he does not repeat anything like other toddlers I know. He will only say words in their total context, not when asked. He knows absolutely everything I’m asking him, his understanding is quite remarkable. But I’d have thought this means he should have more words? He seems to pronounce B ‘G’ instead. So struggles with Daddy.. it comes out like Gaggy but he used to say dadada… the same for the B sound, he would make that and now doesn’t. I have no other concerns, he is honestly exceeding everywhere else. Should I get in early with a private speech therapist? Or wait it out… Thanks a worried first time mum 🥰

I’d wait it out I don’t see any massive red flags from what you have said … I’d reassess around 2-2.5 cause they have massive explosions of language and obviously if that doesn’t happen then you can address it but atm he sounds within range of normal.

This just looks like you’re writing about my son, as he is the exact same! Especially with “Gaggy”🤣 I’m personally not worried too much about his speech just now, sometimes here and there I wonder why he isn’t saying more but he will eventually! If you feel like it’s best to take your son to a speech therapist that’s completely up to you! If you think he will benefit from it then I don’t see why not!

I have 19 months twins and they don’t speak, they babble a lot but they don’t say anything with sense. They try to repeat things but it doesn’t sound even close to what we say. They are also learning two different languages ( Spanish and English) and even if the theory says it doesn’t affect, I think it does. They understand instructions in both languages perfectly. I called the HV a month ago and they told me not to worry at all because every kid is different and until they are 2 or even 2 and half they can take a while to speak properly. Also they mentioned that they cannot refer toddlers to speech therapist until they turn 3 years old. I try not to worry and think that they will speak properly eventually.
