Elective C-Section Prep

Hi Girls, any advice for a FTM with an elective c-section almost 5 weeks away. How far in advance is best to get waxing? I think I read it’s not ideal to be freshly waxed right before surgery. And also what are peoples opinion on nails? I usually have Gel on my fingers but all my pre surgery stuff is quite generic saying ‘no nail vanish’ yet I know so many friends who have had c-section with gels or acrylics or those that have ended up have unexpected emergency sections with stuff on their nails. All really minor in the grand scheme of things I know!

Glad you've asked this as I wanted to know the same thing 🙌

I asked my beauty therapist about waxing and she said latest 2 weeks before because it has been known to send people into early labour. I have therefore booked for 2 weeks before my elective date. I had acrylic nails with gel on my hands & gel on my toes when I had my unplanned section with my first, there was no issues whatsoever. I think usually they ask you to not have it on for an elective, or take at least one nail off so they can do you oxygen levels but it seems to differ from place to place. If they can monitor you in an emergency, they can monitor you in an elective. I will be having my nails done at my usual apt before my elective date x

@Mia I never knew about the waxing cause early labour . Now you got me thinking that maybe that was the reason I lost my baby last year at 17 weeks . I went for a wax down there at 16 weeks before my holidays , after holidays we had a private gender scan to find out the baby had passed at 16 weeks and we had no idea . Now I wonder if it was because of that or not 😳

@Nicol it won't be. Don't worry about that i was waxed every 4 weeks through pregnancy x

@Mia interesting! I have never heard this about waxing. Thanks for sharing x

@Lauren I have absolutely no idea if it’s accurate but I wasn’t chancing it when I booked my apt. I have too much to do in November for this baby to come early 😂 @@NicolI’m really sorry about your previous loss, I can’t imagine how awful that was for you 😞 Like Alana, I was also waxed throughout my previous pregnancy & this one, with no issues. As I am sure lots of people are. I think if there was any chance it would harm baby they would tell you not to do it. Though I understand after my comment why you might think it the cause and I’m sorry if I’ve brought up painful memories xx

I had a guide come through with my c section letter that said to shave 3 days before and no later, so I’m guessing they don’t want it too fresh because of infection risk? They also said no gel or polish. I also know people who have had emergency c sections with full gels but think I might avoid the anxiety of them ripping off a nail just before surgery! When I had my cervical stitch put in at 17 weeks (same pain relief procedure - spinal) there was a monitor on the end of my finger the whole time x

Oooo I’m stuck now as my beauty therapist said a few days before my due date will be fine? 🥲 I don’t think I’ve timed it to be able to have one 2 weeks before now..

@Amy I wouldn’t worry, it will differ from place to place I bet. I’m fairly sure when I had my 1st she mentioned it could bring on labour (different salon) but I’m sure I didn’t have it done 2 weeks before, I’m sure it was closer to my induction 🤔 Also, I’m not sure how they can know it was the waxing specifically 🤷‍♀️ It’s probs just one of those - oh, I had a pregnant lady in for a wax and that night or next day she went into labour - type things xx

I was told as waxing and shaving cause micro tears in the skin you cannot have it before a C-section due to infection risk, nothing to do with bringing on labour but all to do with having microscopic wounds and to leave 2 weeks between hair removal and surgery because of that. I was also told no nail varnish at all as it messed with the oxygen detector. Obviously with an emergency the life of yourself and baby are more important than anything so if you have nail varnish on there isn’t a lot they can do, but for a planned section to make it easier it’s better to not have it on.
