Speech delay?

My 18 month has been saying dads since 10 months but he is still not saying mama or any other word tbh. He hums his rhymes and I’ve heard him saying bed when listening to ‘monkeys jumping on the bed” rhyme. I don’t know if I should be worried now. I read to him, talk to him, do off screen activities and I don’t know where I’m failing. Should I pay for one of these guides advertised on IG

I don’t think you failing at all. Every baby learns differently. In due time !

I also have an 18 month old who still doesn’t say Mama but she does say other words like daddy, agua, doggie do you have other children I was told that she doesn’t know she can call me mom since she doesn’t hear anyone else calling me that. I’ve been talking in 3rd person more. Mama is going to change your diaper etc and she finally said it but i notice she doesn’t call me that often maybe with time. I wouldn’t worry to much .

@Blanca im a first time mum 😭

Definitely just talk to them in third person, I have done this with mine since the very beginning and she’s 18 months old and has such a good vocabulary.

Around 18 months, most toddlers have around 10 words. This can be any word that they use consistently by themselves, so not in imitation. This might look like calling your name, or nouns out loud, “mama” when they see mama or “milk” when they see or want it . Imitation is you say it, they say it. Signs count as words, anything that is used as a label counts even if it’s not the word. For example, “moo” for “cow” or “vroom” for car. Some things I look for as a speech pathologist is if they are imitating consistently, using fun sound effects (animal sounds, vehicle sounds, and exclamations “wow”, “yay”,etc) if a child isn’t using a lot of words but is imitating consistently then I know they’re learning! It never hurts to go to an Early Support Agency and have an evaluation! Also I don’t recommend those guides on IG because a lot of those people aren’t licensed professionals.

I recommend Speech Sisters on IG to my clients. They have a bunch of free resources and ideas on how to support speech. Again, I don’t recommend buying the guides, it would be worth your money to go through an Early Support Agency and use insurance to have an evaluation. It’s highly likely you are doing everything right and they either need more time or some extra support! Google ESIT to find ones in your area 😊

I have a 18m old who only says dada and bye bye, I wanted to start him in speech therapy just so he didn’t keep getting more delayed but we’re trying that now, and he had a hearing test done. They don’t suspect Autism or anything, so I wouldn’t freak out. And if you’re open to speech therapy they let me go ahead and start my son!

Please don't pay for anything. The US has one of the most robust early intervention programs available and your son will likely qualify for free speech therapy from a licensed SLP, which will not only help him but will help you learn lots of ways you can encourage his language too. You can ask your doctor for a referral or just look up your state's early intervention program and self-refer. All of our tax dollars pay for it and it's really amazing so definitely take advantage of it!

My 18 month old has no words at all! The pediatrician had us start speech, but still nothing!

my almost 18 month old is only saying dada, mama, & nana (banana) he also can say a few animal sounds. but i’m not too worried, we might go into a speech program after the next doctor visit but we will see how that goes😌

My son is very similar. I was worried about autism or something but my pediatrician said that it’s too early for speech. He’s recommending we see where he is when he has his 2 year appointment due to their short attention spans. If he’s still behind we will get him therapy.
