Healthcare worker wanting to visit our home before birth

Im not originally from the UK but had a call from a healthcare worker** wanting to visit our home and talk about the pregnancy. Is this normal? What is the aim of these visits? She was asking me to let her know where I am seeing a midwife which makes me wonder how she got my number. **I meant health visitor:)

Do you mean a health visitor? If so it's completely normal

Sounds like this might be the health visitor. Some do a visit before baby arrives.

@Laurie oh yes that’s the one thank you:) is this offered to everyone essentially?

@Alex Yes it is. I think in some areas they only visit once baby has been born but others visit to meet you beforehand

@Laurie do you know what is the aim of the visit?

My health visitor spoke to me about safe sleeping/feeding options/made sure I was well supported/asked about my mental well-being. She didn’t look around the house or ask to see where baby would be sleeping or anything, all very casual.

@Alex Basically what Ashley said above but mine did look where baby would be sleeping

It is supposed to be mandatory that all health visiting services offer 5 face to face appointments, 1 of which is in your third trimester. Like Ashleigh said it's really casual. The health visiting team is who you swap to after you're discharged from midwife care, they're all trained nurses/midwives but they just specialise in helping you to care for baby when you bring them home 😊 I still found my antenatal HV appt really helpful even though it's our second child 😊 pregnancy can seem very medical and the entire focus is getting baby out healthy, HV are much more holistic and focused on keeping everyone happy and healthy when baby arrives, adjusting to life with a newborn etc 😊

I've had 3 kids in 3 different counties and I've never had (or been offered) a home visit BEFORE birth, so seems strange to me! But if others have then hey ho.

Health visitor visit before babies arrival is normal. My heath visitor didn't visit until after baby was born because little boy was born 3 days before health visitor was supposed to be visiting 😂 it's really casual and nothing to worry about.

It's a standard procedure from some health visiting services to visit you. Mine came in asked how my pregnancy was going. If I feel I'm ready/had everything and gave me my daughters red book (health record book). It was maybe a 10 minute visit.

It varies area to area. Some places do a visit in pregnancy, some don’t. Completely normal.

Just want to put it out there - Heath Visits are not mandatory. If you don't want them to come then you can politely decline!

Yes I had one coming it was nice hour or so chat We talked about baby safe sleeping I asked her question … she showed go sleeping positions .. it was nice having her around She come back when baby was born

I’m a health visitor and it is very normal. Most areas are extremely short staffed so can’t provide antenatal visits to all mums but where possible will try to prioritise first time mums, mums from other countries who may not be aware of the English healthcare system, those who have extra risks etc. it’s a good opportunity to meet beforehand find out what the service can offer, do all the introductions etc give you info on those first few weeks what to expect feeding etc then when the midwife is no longer seeing you we can take over (sometimes there is a slight overlap)

I had one during pregnancy. I was about 33 weeks I think. I really panicked. Had the house absolutely spotless. My partner was literally hoovering the stairs and the skirting boards as she knocked on the door 🙈. Really nice chat. She went from the front door to the living room, she introduced herself and the service they provide and asked how I was doing, feeling, any concerns, did I have any complications etc and then she left! She come back last week when baby was a week old. She's lovely!
