Leaking/breastfeeding

Hey girlies! So I'm 27 weeks today and I'm hearing everywhere from fellow FTM that I should be waking up in pools of colostrum/milk by now? Is this true? Am I not producing the way I should? Will I still be able to breastfeed? HELP 😂😂

Don’t worry some people leak loads and some don’t until after birth you will be able to breastfeed you’ve got this mamma ❤️xx

@Rebecca thankyou ❤️❤️ just so nervous

@Rose-Anna the joys of being a ftm if you need I’m always here for a chat ❤️xxx

I didn’t leak AT ALL through my whole pregnancy or through 15 months of breastfeeding! I always had plenty of milk! Every body is different, please don’t worry x

@Milly thanks! 😊 So tmi but, when the baby latches and sucks, the milk just comes out?

@Milly sorry if I sound stupid 😂

No not at all at 25 weeks! Every body is different like Milly said

The colostrum you produce during pregnancy is hormonal and doesn't have any correlation to your supply after birth. The birth itself and baby latching triggers your supply to come in. In my first pregnancy I only had leaking from my right breast and never from my left. And even then the leaking from my right wasn't loads it was just little marks in my bra. I've breastfed from both breasts for over 2.5 years. Colostrum is a lot more concentrated so I would think it's very normal that you don't have loads of leaking even if the colostrum is there.

@Jess thankyou so much ❤️❤️

Absolutely not! Some people leak and some don’t. One of my nipples is like a tap and honestly it’s annoying 😂 the colostrum is absolutely nothing to do with your milk and if you leak it not doesn’t determine your ability to breastfeed/your milk supply x

Not at all true! My first I didn't leak at all in pregnancy, but I had a great post birth and I'm still breastfeeding my 2 year old now through this pregnancy!! Even though I've all but dried up 🥴 Once you hit 37 weeks you might like to try expressing colostrum which 1) has all the benefits of having some colostrum stored, but also 2) can build confidence for ftm who are planning on breastfeeding 🥰 there's lots of resources on this if you're interested, look at la leche league and the breastfeeding network. Your hospital may have a dedicated infant feeding team too, mine runs drop in sessions with the team to learn about colostrum harvesting ❤️

My first pregnancy I leaked from 16wks onwards - not waking up in pools of it but leakage every now and then. I bf for 4m (fell pregnant again). My milk supply stopped and turned straight back into colostrum - found out around 6wks pregnant. I bf my second for 17m and fell pregnant again when he was 15m. One boob was producing colostrum and the other was producing milk. I’ve since stopped breastfeeding him as I just couldn’t keep up any more. I haven’t had any leaks yet. Each pregnancy, baby, mama is very different. Don’t feel discouraged at all - it has no bearing on whether you’ll be able to breastfeed or not. ❤️

@Rose-Anna Yes! Half the time you don’t see anything, you can just see baby swallowing and see drops on your nipple after they’re off to know it was coming out. Sometimes if they pull off before they’ve emptied a boob, I could squeeze my nipple a see a tiny squirt, but that was only sometimes ☺️ Baby latching triggers the hormone release for milk to release so you can’t really judge anything until they’re here, and doing it for real!
